MUSICAL EVENING BY KAVITA MURTHY DESHPANDE
Rotary Club of
Calcutta Metropolitan is bringing to town a singer
with a difference. Kavita
Murthy Deshpande has a pleasing and
attractive stage presence and blessed
with a versatile and
wide-ranging mellifluous voice. She sings, on the one
hand in the
voices of Noorjehan, Shamshad Begum, Suraiya, Geeta Dutt and
other noted singers of yesteryears, while on the other hand, she
is
equally facile with modern voices of Lata, Alka Yagnik,
Shreya Ghoshal and
others.
She would present a grand musical evening at the invitation of
Rotary
Club of Calcutta Metropolitan with her full orchestra team
from Mumbai at G
D Birla Sabhagar on Saturday 15th March 2008 at
6-30 pm. The program would
support our efforts to help mentally
challenged children of AHEAD with a
physiotherapy unit.
Information on availability of invitation cards can be had from
Mr
Dipak Das on Phone 94323.41689 or 4001.2626 (daytime).

G ' day Mate
Congratulations on your victory last night.
You played well so let us shake hands and we await for the
next time in
India later this year.
I do not think there was any ugly behaviour by our team. We
cop heaps
when we play in India especially from your crowds,
who are fanatics.
I
would love to be in India for the next test series between our
two cricket
mad nations.
Congratulations once again India. You were the better team!!!

You are a good Sport, John. A fine congratulatory note
regarding the
"Famous Indian Victory." I prefer
reading such notes as yours to any others
of a
nationalist chest thumping type. Let the score speak
for itself. When
the game is over, leave it on the
field and join your opponent-mates in the
club house
for friendly refreshment, and slap on the back and
good old
comradery ...
Congratulations to India. And good on you, John, for
your
sportsmanship!

Hello Rtn.John Glassford, and all the cricket lovers on ROTI,
Thanks for congratulating the Indian team. Hard luck John ,
but the
point is that India is an upcoming team, while Australia
is a side which is
seeing too much of retirements, so it is in
a transition phase. Now the
Aussies require young blood
to be injected in the side. It is also not out
of context to
mention that Indian young boys are the under 19 World
Champions now, winning the U-19 world cup in Malaysia,
only this
Sunday.
Just to give you an idea of how fanatic we are about cricket,
I should
tell you that right now, not only all the TV news
channels are running the
news of Indian victory as the no. 1
to no. 5 headlines, we are having , on
our prime time TV news,
and talk shows, interviews with Mothers of our
newborn stars,
Harbhajan, Praveen Kumar, and other cricket stars. There are
special interviews with brothers, sisters, and even neighbours
of the
cricket stars. There are public celebrations which will
last at least for a
couple of days..
The BCCI (Board of Cricket Control in India) has declared a
cash award
of Rs. 10 Crore ( 2.5 Million US $) for the team.
The corporate business
houses, and the state governments have
started queuing up for bestowing
awards on the stars in excess
of a million dollars, individually.
With all this money splashing, I would like to suggest that,
Rotary can
encash the popularity of the game, (at least in India,
Aus, UK, and
Pakistan) and organise charity cricket matches
between prominent teams, as a
fund raising effort, and also can
propagate the Rotary Foundation programs
of Polio eradication,
and water management, through such cricket events. (I
know
soccer is more popular in UK, as compared to cricket , but the
Asian population there, loves cricket)
Off course, to some, cricket, is something that chirps, but in all
more
than 2 billion people follow cricket, and that is 33 %
of the world.

Good on you Sudhindra
Well said mate!
Maybe you Indian Rotarians can get your cricket board
to harness some
of that euphoria for the people of India
that are doing it tough.
Maybe
you could also get the Indian cricketers to support
an orphan or million in
Africa! Cricket is played in Africa
especially South Africa, Kenya and
Zimbabwe in fact
everywhere the British were in power.
Now I am going to Wagga Wagga this morning to see
if I can buy an
Indian one day cricket shirt!!! I will wear it
to our Indian night on
Saturday in honour of your victories.
You Indians will be more than aware that Steve Waugh
supports an
orphange in India. I wonder if the Little Master
Sachin would support Orphan
Rescue in Africa.
Anyone know Sachin?
Good on you India.

John,
Were you the bloke making a mad dash across the cricket
field
in his birthday suit?
Looked more like a Kiwanian to me, but couldn't make it
all out.
Wasn't wearing a badge, so I suppose he'll get a fine at
the next
meeting.
