ROTARY MEDICAL MISSION TO
NIGERIA
________________________________________________________
The
success of the last Rotary Medical Mission to Sierra Leone
in May 2007 has
led the current District leadership to put in action
another mission – this
time to Nigeria in May 2008. In many respects,
Mission Nigeria replicates
the action plan of Mission Sierra Leone,
because of the common factor for
both, Mission Director AG
Vishnu Dhandhania of RC Calcutta
Metropolitan.
Nigerian Mission, like Sierra Leone Mission, is a joint venture of
Districts 3290 and 3240, and is planned to leave from Kolkata on
18th
May 2007. Mission would comprise of an 11-member surgical
team consisting
of:
1. Dr Bhaba Sankar Das (General Surgeon, 3290)
2. Dr Nareshwar Sarma (General Surgeon, 3240)
3. Dr Rintu Guha Niyogi (ENT, 3240)
4. Dr Madhu Sudan Bannerjee (Gynecologist, 3290)
5. Dr Indra Kumar Singh (Gynecologist, 3240)
6. Dr Arabinda Ray (Anaesthetist, 3290)
7. Dr Pradeep K Saraf (Ophthalmologist, 3290)
8. Dr Joydeep Banerjee (Dentist, 3290)
9. Dr Iqbal Rahman (Anaesthetist, 3290)
10. Dr Gautam K Kundu (Dentist, 3240) – Deputy Team Leader
11. Dr Neeraja Rateria (Ophthalmologist, 3290) – Team Leader
PROJECT LOCATION IN NIGERIA:
Medical surgeries and treatment
would be conducted by Indian team
at Makurdi in Benue State; and Jos in
Plateau State of north central
Nigeria, both in Dist 9120.
Benue and Plateau States are accessible to patients from at least
3
other states each. This would ensure greatest district wide
impact, as
indigent patients can be moved from nearby states to
these two
locations. Besides, in these two locations, Rotarians of
Nigeria have
a reasonable assurance of collaboration with government
officials for
logistics support to the mission's goals. They both also
have adequate
hospital facilities to support the mission.
SCHEDULE OF MISSION:
Friday 2nd May –
Orientation Seminar and fellowship dinner at Rotary
Sadan, Kolkata
which is mandatory for entire team to participate. PDG Rajeev
Pradhan, Sholapur, Dist 3130 will be keynote speaker. Earlier,
all
members would have to take Yellow Fever Vaccination, a
mandatory requirement
for travel to most African countries,
including Nigeria.
Saturday 17th May –
A grand send-off function shall be organised
together with a
Press Meet, during which the team would be formally
presented
before the Rotarians.
Sunday 18th May -
The team would depart Calcutta on Sunday 18th May and
arrive
Lagos Int’l Airport on way to domestic airport Abuja to reach Makurdi
(Benue) on
Monday 19th May, its final destination during the first leg of Nigerian
tour. After 5 days of medical work at Makurdi, the Mission would shift
its base to Jos (Plateau) travelling by road on
Sunday 25th May.
On Friday 30th May, the Mission would complete its official work and
travel a two hour distance by road to arrive at a game sanctuary to
relax for a day before taking international flight ex-Lagos on
Sunday 1st June 2008.
EQUIPMENTS AND MEDICINES:
A panel of Doctors listed below are
working relentlessly and coordinating
with team members to finalize the list
of equipments and medicines,
in consultation of Rotarian doctors of Nigeria,
within the total budget.
· Dr Arabinda Ray, RC Garden Reach
· Dr Naresh Goyal, RC Cal Metropolitan
· Dr Aruna Tantia, RC Salt Lake City
