Dear Rotary of Belmont Buddies,

Although we had our last meeting this past Tuesday, and I would no longer be your president even if we were still a club, I nonetheless thought I should pull us together over e-mail to communicate news and to help coordinate remaining activities.
The more important event on Tuesday was the funeral for our beloved Bob Darby.  Steve gave a very fitting eulogy, and I personally was pleased to learn so many interesting facts about Bob's life. Who would ever come up with pistachio-pineapple flavored ice cream in the days Bob was making and selling it?

It was moving to me that Bob's family decided that in lieu of flowers donations could be made to Rotary scholarships. Please refer to a previous e-mail from Steve about details. Jerry, I suppose you will have one more treasurer/secretarial duty, that being to notify Jen Darby of donations that come in for Rotary scholarships in Bob's memory.

Following the funeral service I came back to Belmont  and personally had the privilege of attending a special department head meeting in honor of our Tom.  It was so clear that he was highly esteemed by Town leaders and made a huge impact during his short tenure in Belmont.

We were a very small group at our last meeting, but it was wonderful to see Bob and Janet Gooltz, who were in town to visit family, and who also made it a point to attend Bob's funeral.

Now some housekeeping business-I contacted the Belmont Historical Society, and it appears that they are willing to take all the items I mentioned that we would want to contribute.  Their curator, Victoria Hasse, is out of town, but when she returns some time in July we will do the actual work of getting those items to her.  I started going over all our inventory myself yesterday.  There are some items such as the Rotary sun catchers, pencils and Belmont flags that I think would be good mementos for us to keep ourselves. Some items are appropriate for the district, and Swami has graciously offered to take  any items remaining, so we don't have to face the decision to discard or not.  I found a photo album of the district conference the year Bob was PDG.  I will send it to Jen.

Dan informed me that Emily Farnsworth's Paul Harris Fellow award came in.  Congratulations to Emily!  It's good that all those years of hosting our holiday party and her faithful and frequent visits to our breakfast meeting could be recognized.
Dan and I also made the executive decision to transfer our remaining 700 points to Kusum.  Kusum has worked very hard for our club, volunteering for jobs at every turn, such as getting our breakfasts in the morning and offering to be treasurer and secretary should we have continued as a club. Years back she  donated a good deal of her time and personal funds to the well/school project in India. Thank you, Kusum.

I did not want to start organizing our celebration event sooner because of events around Bob's death.
This coming week is that of July 4, so it would not work anyway for us to get together anyway.
In the next few days, however, it would be good to get your feedback on when would be a good time and place.  At the meeting before last we decided that making a dinner date mid-week would be best time and that we should have it at a nice restaurant, i.e. not along the lines of Szechuan Gardens in Waltham, but more like the Chateau, Capital Grille, etc.
Let's think about the week of July 14 and be prepared to bring your favorite stories to the celebration.

Yours in (the spirit of) Rotary,
Nava

My fellow Rotarians,

For those that were not able to attend Bob's funeral (and for those who may have fallen asleep during my scintillating tribute to Bob...LOL), attached please find a copy of my eulogy for your review and reflection.  I was surprised, touched and honored when Bob's family asked me to say a few words about Bob at the funeral.  I did my best to do Bob justice in the few minutes I was given and I hope the family found it fitting.  He was a proud Rotarian, as am I, as are all of you.  I am proud to have served in such a strong, giving and kind group as all of you for all these years and am prouder still to count each and every one of you as my friend.  As we all go forth, be well and, as the late Warren Zevon (for all you unhip oldsters out there...he was the musician who, among other memorable tunes, wrote and sang Werewolves of London....you know...."Aaahoo...werewolves on London...Aaahoo!") advised "Enjoy every sandwich!". (Google it or read my eulogy...they are words to live by!)  Best to all.  Have a great summer.

Regards,

Steve

Good job, Steve.  Sorry I couldn't get back for it. I played for the Installation Dinner last night for the new President of the Sanford Rotary and the Installing Officer was Julia Phelps ! She is as heartbroken about our club as we all are......   Unfortunately, just playing the piano all evening sent my back into grueling pain and a trip to my local Chiropractor today after the Rotary Meeting this morning--aarrgghh. I am lying on cold packs now for a few days so I hopefully can enjoy my family all coming for my 81st birthday Tuesday. Love to all.

I wish I'd been there for the last meeting and Bob's funeral, but unfortunately my meeting in LA was mandatory.

As Nava might have already reported, the leftover grocery bags, along with the remaining paper plates/napkins/etc have been donated to the Belmont Food Pantry.  I still have some old signs, but only a few of them are probably worth saving.

I also have a bunch of salad plates (real plates, not paper or plastic) that came from the library when we moved out.  The belief was that they belonged to the club or Bob, but nobody knew.  Any suggestions for what to do with them?

-Dan
