My fellow Rotarians and friends,
I just received a call from Jennifer Darby informing me that her dad and our friend, Bob Darby, has died. He passed painlessly and peacefully a few hours ago. Jennifer was understandably upset but soldiered through with notifying Bob's friends and loved ones and made it a point for me to inform his fellow Rotarians. I don't know if she was going to call Steve May or his fellow PDG's but I would think that Swami or Nava should notify those people at your earliest opportunity.
Given Bob's recent health challenges, his passing is not unexpected, but I, for one, am greatly saddened nonetheless. I guess that one can be prepared, but never ready for news like this.
No arrangements set yet. Jen said it will be in the Boston Globe. When I went to visit Bob last Saturday, I had decided not to tell him that Belmont Rotary voted to disband. The fact that he was asleep during my visit made it easier for me. Coincidentally, Jenn had made the same decision and, to both of our knowledge, Bob passed as a proud member of the Rotary Club of Belmont, which, as of today, is still in existance and in good standing. Quite fitting I would think. I will forever think of Bob, in his apron, with spatula in hand, dishing out a weekly gastronomical smorgasbord of breakfast delights, often with a seasonal or holiday theme, with his everpresent smile and preaching his one Rotary truism (at least according to Bob).... that "Past District Governors cannot be fined at Rotary"! I never knew, and he, despite my asking repeatedly, never did tell me the origin of that sacrocanct rule, but it worked for me and was the source of many laughs over the years. I'm sure we will lift our glasses and toast Bob when we next get together. Rest in peace Bob. Please keep Bob, Jennifer and Susan in your thoughts and prayers.
Regards,
Steve
