Western Antarctic Ice Chunk Collapses A chunk of Antarctic ice about the size of Manhattan suddenly collapsed in late March as a result of global warming. The Wilkins Ice Shelf, a 160-square-mile chunk located in western Antarctica, began to show signs of disintegration via satellite images on February 28. The Wilkins Ice Shelf may have been there for as long as 1,500 years. This is a result of global warming, said British Antarctic Survey scientist David Vaughan. Vaughan had predicted the Wilkins shelf would collapse about 15 years from now. Much of the continent is not warming and some parts are even cooling, Vaughan said. However, the western peninsula, which includes the Wilkins Ice Shelf, juts out into the ocean and is warming. This is the part of the continent where scientists are most concerned about ice melt triggering a rise in sea levels. These occurrences are more indicative of a tipping point or trigger in the climate system, said Sarah Das, a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. "These things are not re-forming," Das said. "So once they're gone, they're gone."April 2008

1) By mailing your write ups  with in 300 words on Effective measures that could be undertaken to stop global Warming and your outlook on global warming as and in our present day  lifestyle.

 

2) What are the high Risk points that can trigger the process of global warming faster and how much did you think that the prophecy of Nostardamus holds true.       ( in 250 words)

E) Finally a news letter on the Global Warming will be designed by us taking 6 best write ups from both the clubs(judged by the intial judging panel) and hard copy  as well as soft copy of it will be furnished to all the Rotaract Clubs of R.I.D 3290 .
