Hi,

I am writing this to you with a lot of hope.

I work with Teach for India which is a nation-wide movement of outstanding college graduates and young professionals, teaching in low-income schools to eliminate educational inequity.

So, I am teaching in a low income school in Bopodi, and I have 64 kids in my 1st grade.

Just to give you a picture - the annual income of the parents of my kids is nothing more than 80,000 per annum.

It effectively means less than even Rs. 7000 per month.

These kids have been deprived of all the opportunities that people like you and I had in school.

I am trying my best to provide them with a safe learning environment,  with resources that they need to equip themselves to fit into this  competitive world but I cannot do it alone, and hence this message goes out, seeking support for my 64 kids.

Most of you wanted to come to my school and meet the kids, but since majority of you are working in IT it’s not possible for you to spare time on weekdays. Hence, I am specially calling my kids on Saturday i.e. 13th July 2013, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (It’s a holiday for them still they are excited and are coming to meet new Didi and Bhaiya). I request you to come and meet these tiny bundles of joy. I am sure you will gain something which cannot be described in words.

Please respond if you will be able to take out some time from your weekend to meet my kids. I will let you know all the further details on basis of your availability.

Also, if you can help them in anyway, please, PLEASE, do let me know.

 How you can help?

  1. Donate books, notebooks, story books, stationary, etc.
  2. Donate any amount to my class charity. Starting from Rs. 10. Any amount is most welcome. Every penny will make a difference.
  3. I am trying to raise money to buy a projector, a projector screen, white board, and speaker system for the class. We have a lot of e-learning stuff which we are unable to use as we don't have a projector. Making the classroom audio-visual will help my kids learn better and faster. It will benefit the entire school as well.
  4. Come meet the kids! Spend a day with them at my school. Talk to them about your career and how they can also become what they dream of becoming someday. Or maybe you can come just to chill with them! They are a fun bunch! They will treat you to chai and samosa, I promise :).  They LOVE meeting new didis and bhaiyas.
  5. Volunteer in my classroom for a day or more than a day.
  6. If you are good at any sport/ art/ craft/ or anything else, please spend a day at my school engaging the kids in your hobby, teaching them something new. They will love it! Or if you can think of anything that can be shared with 6 year olds, feel free to tell me. I'll help you organise it.
  7. You can also sponsor/ arrange/ suggest field trips for them Fun or educational trips - ideas on both are most welcome.
  8. At this moment, we are also planning to paint our class as our walls are really bad and we are trying to raise funds for that. Also planning to get some good books, furniture and a white board. Please help in any way you can. The total cost will come up to 35,000/-We need some mattress  chataais to sit on the floor, it will be kind of you to donate some
  9. If you know someone from media/arts/literature/law/business or any other field, please try to get them to speak to my kids as that will motivate them to achieve the impossible in life. It also helps to promote the school as we are trying our best to control the dropout rates.  It will make them aware of the gazillion opportunities that are there for them.
  10. Lastly, Please PLEASE spread the word! :) If you can please forward this mail to your friends who can just come and meet my kids and spread some love. I will be grateful to you.

I hope to see maximum of you on Saturday. Please do respond if you will be able to come , accordingly I will have to talk to authorities.

 Thank you for your time.

If you just want to share some teaching/classroom ideas with me, feel free to do that too. I would be more than happy! :)

None of the options I have mentioned are applicable to you but if you still feel like doing something about it, contact me, we’ll figure something out.

Look forward to hear from you.

Thank you in advance!

Much love,

Manvi Arora
