Formed in Teignmouth, Devon, in 1994, Muse signed with Taste Media and released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999.[1] It was a success across Europe, and in the UK reached number 29 on the UK Albums Chart,[2] and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).[3] Five singles were released from Showbiz, with final, "Unintended", becoming Muse's first to reach the top 20 on the UK Singles Chart.[4] Muse released their second album, Origin of Symmetry, in 2001, which reached number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified double platinum by the BPI.[2][3] The first three singles, "Plug In Baby", "New Born" and "Bliss", all reached the UK top 25.[4]

In 2002, Muse released their first live video album, Hullabaloo: Live at Le Zenith, Paris, and the compilation album Hullabaloo Soundtrack.[1] The video reached number 2 on the UK Music Video Chart,[5] while the soundtrack album reached number 10 on the UK Albums Chart.[2] Their third studio album, Absolution, released on East West Records in 2003, was the first Muse album to top the UK Albums Chart.[2] It reached number 103 on the US Billboard 200,[6] but has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[7] "Time Is Running Out" was the first Muse single to enter the UK Singles Chart top ten, reaching number 8.[4] The live video Absolution Tour reached number 9 on the UK Music Video Chart.[8]

After founding their own label, Helium-3, and signing with Warner Bros. Records, Muse released their fourth studio album, Black Holes and Revelations in 2006. It topped several albums charts and reached the top ten on the Billboard 200.[6] The lead single, "Supermassive Black Hole", is Muse's most successful on the UK Singles Chart to date, reaching number 4.[4] Muse's first live album, HAARP, was released in 2008 and reached number 2 on the UK Albums Chart.[2] The Resistance followed in 2009, topping several countries' album charts for the first time, as well as reaching number 3 in the US.[6] The first single from the album, "Uprising", was the band's first to reach the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100,[9] as well as their fourth to reach the top ten in the UK.[4] The 2nd Law and Drones both topped the UK Albums Chart,[2] and Drones was Muse's first release to reach number one on the Billboard 200.[6] Simulation Theory and Will of the People were released in 2018 and 2022, respectively, with the latter marking Muse's seventh consecutive album to reach number one on the UK charts.

Does anybody have a *complete-all-on-one-page* list of Muse B-Sides and other non-album tracks? I've searched everywhere (included MuseWiki and been unable to locate one). I'd appreciate it if somebody could post a list on here - it would make my life a whole lot easier!

A lot of people have WOTP, ST and Drones at the bottom of their rankings. This would seem to imply MUSE are basically just getting worse with the years. So that begs the question... do you think they have it in them to ever make an album on the same level as the "big 3" again? What do you think could be stopping them (or really Matt) from producing something as quality?

Muse's most recent album, Will Of The People concludes with a track called We Are Fucking Fucked, but to be fair, that's an assessment they'd already reached here, with Bellamy's three-part, 12-minute orchestral masterpiece Exogenesis: Symphony, wherein our bold protagonists decide that our time on earth must, of necessity, come to an end, and we must "breach the outer sphere" in order to start anew.

Which is all very well, except that much of what precedes this epic climax - most notably the irresistible glam stomp of Uprising - serves up rallying calls for heroic stands against our shadowy oppressors. Cowards! Splitters! Traitors! Etc,.

Ludicrous and fabulous in equal measure, then, The Resistance is peak Muse, and an unmitigated joy.

Heavily indebted to Radiohead and Jeff Buckley, and by far the most restrained and 'conventional' album in Muse's catalogue, Showbiz deserves more love than it was afforded upon its release in September 1999. Consciously choosing to play safe by setting aside their more experimental early material for use as single B-sides, Muse ruffled few feathers with their debut album, but the quirky, hooky Muscle Museum, the gorgeous Unintended and the soaring, riffy Cave remain firm fan favourites.

Months ahead of the release their third album, Muse described their work in progress as "fat as fuck." Emboldened by the international success of Origin Of Symmetry, the Devon trio embraced the opportunity to indulge their most experimental urges in its creation, recording Dom Howard's drums in a swimming pool, and Bellamy's guitar parts in a field, then ransacking a castle to re-purpose cartwheels and cattle prods as 'instruments'. The result was the darkest, heaviest, boldest album of their early career.

From the apocalyptic groove-rock of Time Is Running Out to the extraordinary art-metal of Stockholm Syndrome, Absolution, the trio's first UK number one album, is the sound of an inspired, fearless, ultra-confident band who knew their time had arrived, and the world was listening.

This album was created in Los Angelesand London and is influenced by the increasing uncertainty and instability in the world. A pandemic, new wars in Europe, massive protests & riots, an attempted insurrection, Western democracy wavering, rising authoritarianism, wildfires and natural disasters and the destabilisation of the global order all informed Will OfThe People. It has been a worrying and scary time for all of us as the Western empire and the natural world, which have cradled us for so long are genuinely threatened. This album is a personal navigation through those fears and preparation for what comes next.

If you've heard even one note of [artist id="1191782"]Muse's[/artist] new album, The Resistance -- or if you saw their roof-blowing [article id="1621405"]performance at the VMAs[/article] -- you know that the English trio are far from understated.

But Muse, who are contributing a remix of The Resistance song "I Belong to You" to the [article id="1621942"]soundtrack of the upcoming "Twilight" sequel "New Moon,"[/article] had some new ideas for their fifth album, which they said is their most personal work to date.

"I think it's quite a departure from what we've done in the past," drummer Dominic Howard said. "There's lots of different styles of music that we tried out. There's different styles of music that we feel like we've never come across before. And, well ... we've got a big symphony on there. It's a three-part symphony right at the end of the album, which is this very kind of, like, ambitious, very orchestral huge piece of music which is a pretty hard task to take on, but ended up sounding great."

"I think the structure of the album has a mild, loose narrative ... which is something different to what we've done before," frontman Matthew Bellamy explained. "I wouldn't say it's a pure concept album, but it's definitely got a few themes which go throughout. Themes like revolution, uprising, wanting political change, constitutional reform ... as well as a sort-of, kind-of love story developing in the midst of all that."

Bellamy said the album is a kind of musical companion to "1984," the classic George Orwell novel about a lone man's rebellion against a controlling totalitarian government. But, despite those far-reaching, worldly themes, Howard said that at its heart, The Resistance, which was produced by the band, is really a personal statement. "We did a song called 'Undisclosed Desires,' which is very kind of programmed and much more electronic-sounding than anything we've ever done before," he said. "And we produced it all by ourselves as well, so I think for that it sounded very, very personal and also gave us a chance to feel very comfortable to experiment with all these ideas and ... you know, somehow we finished it."

I am a freelance graphic designer working as GVD for the last 20+ years. I have done a number of album cover designs over the years, for myself and many local and international artists, and I have been asked to include a few samples of my own work. I have done so below: one of my own albums as Afternoons In Stereo, and an album design I did for a local singer/songwriter.

Released in 1979, this certainly hails from the heyday of great existential album covers. I venture there was a real desire to emulate the work of Storm Thorgerson and his exemplary work with his Hipgnosis design studio. This cover certainly shares similar aesthetics, reminding one of a time when not putting the band on the cover was still considered a creative and bold marketing move!
