We could have been roselug2.0!

Anyway, thanks for attempting to breathe some life into this. Might be
helpful that as each of us respond to this that we each enumerate our
goals, there reasons why each of us is interested in being a member of
this group. That way, if we do meet, we may have some topics of
discussion. Here are mine:

1. Linux on the desktop, in particular Ubuntu or Debian. I swear, I
will not be going to Vista and we all know that the drop dead date for
XP will quickly be upon us.

2. Web development - Linux is an excellent platform for tinkering
with various LAMP projects. Perl was my first scripting language but I
have tried out RoR and am now working on my first Django project.

3. Music and/or media player. I currently have an extra old server in
the family room that has Ubuntu and Amarok for organizing and playing
my network shared mp3 files. I would like to, one day, when I have the
hardware, build a Myth media server.

4. Home automation.

5. Meet other people with similar interests. I can just see those
eyes glaze over when I bring up any one the aforementioned topics at
the usual social gatherings.

Here is to a little momentum.

Good idea!

Here are some of my group goals:

Provide a local mostly Linux
technical sounding board for
discussion and troubleshooting.

Provide another hiring/recruiting
avenue for local Linux talent. If
you know of Linux jobs in the area
post em!

Meet other people with similar

interests. I'd like to have
monthly informal meetings either at
Lunch or in the evenings.

Here here!

Hey! I actually found RoseLUG thru the SVLUG (Silicon Valley). I
used to work in San Jose, and just wanted to find a way to keep up
with other IT people or anyone who had an interest in Linux.

My Main Goals are these:
1. Web Development
At my job currently, I have 3 linux servers running apache/mysql or
postgresql/php or perl.
I'm trying to get to a Dev/Prod environment setup with them. I also
need to revision control, should I need to have a fall back.

2. KDE vs Gnome?
I know it's a long debatable subject, but I have always been a
command line person. I have KDE running right now for Amarok to play
my music, but never really got to see what each has to offer. I like
hearing peoples opinions on likes/dislikes of each.

3. Game servers
May seem odd, but I would like to find out what options are out
there to host game servers. I have a wide range of games that I would
like to host my own LAN party for, and have a game server setup.

And of course, to meet other linux geeks, like myself, and have a
chance to talk or work on projects that we all might have similar
interests in.

I like to use TurboGears which is a python web framework. It allows a
lot of flexibility for a programmer with a good basis in MVC. Django is
another python web framework that's a bit slicker out-of-the-box but
isn't as flexible.

Feh. I like Gnome because it's easier for me to program in but there's
really not much difference between the two.

Hi Everyone,

Glad to see things forming back together again. I really enjoy working
with Linux and have a mixture of different systems running on machines
and virtual machines. I would enjoy meeting and talking Linux / open
source together. Some of my interests are Web development, I am
currently a freelancer programming PHP, Javascript and Ruby on Rails.
I really like PostgreSQL and use MySQL as well. My wife now uses
Ubuntu and wants to learn more graphic design with open source. We
have been playing with GIMP for the last few months. I am currently
working starting a few sites and am writing a custom CMS with PHP Zend
Framework and Smarty Templates. I am currently hosting on a colo'd
CentOS box. I am interested in hearing about jobs and would love to
help build a new site for the group.

Hello, everyone!

I moved out here to California last year from Ohio (February 7, 2007)
to Citrus Heights. I guess I moved there while RoseLUG was just
closing down, as I had joined the old mailing list, but it did not
seem very busy at all. I am now living in Modesto, so I would not be
able to be physically present at any group meetings (unless I am in
the area, of course), but I would like to at least be a part of the
list.

Here are some of my goals:

1) Linux Accessibility I am a legally/partially blind Linux user
(Ubuntu), and I love what the Linux community is doing as far as
accessibility is concerned. I use the Compiz Fusion window manager
with the eZoom plugin which allows me to have a very smooth full-
screen magnification experience without any cost. I am so grateful
that I no longer have to figure out how I can afford to pay over $500
for a Windows screen magnifier application. I want to help others in
similar situations to see that there IS an alternative, and that they
do not have to put themselves at a financial hardship just so that
they can have access to THEIR computer systems.

2) Web Development I am a college student, so I have a LOT to
learn here, but I would like to be able to develop and host Web
sites. I feel that Linux is the BEST platform available through which
this can be accomplished.

3) Application Development I am currently trying to teach myself C
++ and wxWidgets. I would like to gain experience in application
development so that I can possibly have more marketability when ti
comes time for me to seek employment. (The truth is, I need all that
I can get in knowledge in these areas, as I have had so much trouble
with employers who judge me at first glance based upon my eyesight.)

4) I see Linux in general as a great learning experience. It is fun,
educational, and interesting all at the same time. If I could, I
would love to have a job which deals with working with Linux on a
normal basis.

Anyhow, I look forward to what will come with this group, and although
I am not physically near the area anymore, I am rooting for you all.

Subversion is your friend :)

I've always like gnome better but it truely is a personal thing.

Any game based on an id game engine always runs on linux. Unreal
Tournament used to be that way as well. Not sure now.
Since I pretty much play Quake Wars on the net, it's all I pay
attention to.

I've been "away" from linux for a bit but I'm moving back in a
hurry. I'm moving all of our company's servers (Linux and Windows
2003) to enspeed's virtualization platform http://www.enspeed.com. I
use virtual machines for all of my development work for clients as
well internal projects. Both jumpbox and enspeed have appliances I'm
using for development and demo purposes. I do php development but it's
on XP. I ran ubuntu for almost a year on my laptop but it was
fragile, something that has been a common thread for me with linux on
the desktop for a loooong time. Updates were always one step forward,
2 steps back. I have limited time to make things work. If it's a
time sink, I move along. With XP things just work and it never
crashes. I can install XAMPP and have a fully working WAMP dev
environment up and running in about 5 minutes and my IDE of choice is
phpDesigner2008 which is cheap, loaded with great features and is
pretty light weight. I am looking at eclipse-pdt to see if that can
replace phpDesigner but getting going with eclipse is not install and
go. I'd love to run Linux again and with Virtualbox's seamless mode,
I can run a VM of XP for Office and any other tool I like with real
desktop integration. hmmmmmmmmm
