This is a Brethren workshop/retreat that we think would be beneficial for Rainbow's Outreach emphasis to our local community. The organizers require that THREE people from each congregation attend.

Muriel and I would like to go, but we are looking for one more person to make our THREE. Any volunteers (or nominees)?

Subject: "You Can't Stop the River" - Kansas City, KS - Apr 2-5, 2009

As I write you just after Inauguration Week, change is in the air.  There is something happening in the world!  Praise God!  An urgency for justice and community are palpable.  If you feel this, read on.

As I talk with people in congregations around the United States, I hear a longing for a new kind of Christian peace witness, for concrete ways to engage concrete problems.  Many are ready to move from making statements to making a difference.  If this describes you, read on.

Who is hurting in your community?  What situations and social concerns are waiting for inspired and sustained leadership?  How can your congregation complement its ministries of service with sustained efforts for community improvement?   If these are your questions, read on!

To join and equip an emerging set of Christian nonviolence leaders, On Earth Peace is offering a new training retreat, April 2-5, 2009.  "You Can't Stop the River: Community Change for Congregations," will take place in Kansas City, Kansas. It is being hosted by First Central Church of the Brethren in conjunction with the Kansas City Metropolitan Parish Council, Church of the Brethren.

For "You Can't Stop the River," we are looking for teams of three people from several congregations to attend. We believe there are current and emerging leaders who are ready to prepare for effective community change. During the weekend, you can expect to be equipped, nourished, and inspired for efforts to make concrete change in your communities as you work on violence, poverty, and discrimination.

This letter is being sent to you because I believe that you and/or others in your congregation may be excited about participating.  We are particularly thinking of this retreat as follow-up for congregations who participated in On Earth Peace's organizing around the International Day of Prayer for Peace in 2008 and want to take things to the next level -- but we are also including others in this e-mail. Please also share it with other congregations you know.

The timeline is short– April 2-5 is less than three months away!  We are responding to the urgency and readiness that we sense in the air.  We believe God is preparing several sets of leaders who will are longing to step into the river of community change in a powerful way, who will be ready for this event in early April.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Yours sincerely,

Matt Guynn
