mouse/tracker ball problem

hey folks!
i have been running ubuntu on a t23, quite happily. recently i
started using a ps/2 mouse when i'm stationary at my desk, mostly to
give my wrist some support.
when the mouse is plugged in the tracker ball doesn't work. when i
unplug the mouse, the tracker ball *sometimes* works again, but often
i have to restart before it will move at all.
any thoughts?

One thing you could try is to use a usb mouse. Other than that I have
no clue, sorry.
