Kobuki base

Is it possible to add material to the bumpers on the Kobuki base?   I'd like to build a vertical riser so the bumpers would trigger if contact is made to a higher positioned obstacle.   I cannot find a description of what each of the holds on the bumpers "do" --- I assume one is for IR sensor on each segment.   Could I attach something to the others?
