Hi,

I am getting this error message when I run the roscore and subsequently any launch file in new terminal using roslaunch command:

... logging to /home/alexr/.ros/log/8ecd1ab0-b5bf-11e4-bc46-68a3c42fe28b/roslaunch-robotics-3623.log
Checking log directory for disk usage. This may take awhile.
Press Ctrl-C to interrupt
WARNING: disk usage in log directory [/home/rd/.ros/log] is over 1GB.
It's recommended that you use the 'rosclean' command.

started roslaunch server http://robotics.local:59790/
ros_comm version 1.10.12

SUMMARY
========

PARAMETERS
 * /rosdistro
 * /rosversion

NODES

auto-starting new master
process[master]: started with pid [3777]

I get the same warning message about the log folder being over 1GB for every terminal. I searched the rosclean command on ROS and wanted to confirm before using the command (as ROS page says to use the command with care):

rosclean purge

WARNING: use with care. This will delete files from disk!

rosclean purge will remove directories associated with storing ROS-related log files. You will be asked to confirm each deletion and it is important that you verify the command that rosclean purge executes is correct. Otherwise you may lose important files.

Can someone recommend me to use this command ? Also, as ROS keeps adding log files into the /.ros/log folder, is there a management system where old logs are automatically deleted after certain number of days.

Thanks

Alex

Hi Alex,

Yes, it is OK to run 'rosclean purge'.  The message you are getting is just a warning, not an error, and it is just letting you know that the ROS log files are piling up and you might want to clean them.  You will only have to run this command in one terminal.

I don't believe ROS has its own mechanism for deleting the log files after a certain time but you could use cron to run 'rosclean purge' periodically.  However, since you might occasionally want to look at the ROS log files, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this.  It should take quite awhile before the log files build up to 1Gb again and even then, ROS will still continue to work fine until you feel like purging.

Dear Patrick,

Thank you for your reply. I run the command and it cleaned the log files.

Regards
Alex
