GirlPlay is an independent film produced in 2004 by Gina G. Goff and Laura A. Kellam of Goff-Kellam Productions. The feature film was directed by Lee Friedlander.[1] The film premiered at Outfest in 2004, and had a limited theatrical release in 2005.

Robin, who has been married for six years, and Lacie, who has never had a lasting relationship, are both cast to play lesbian lovers in a Los Angeles stage play. Innocently, the stage director, Gabriel runs the actresses through a series of rehearsals designed to "bring out the intimacy" in each performer. Soon the two women find themselves increasingly and undeniably attracted to each other and overcome with desire. They must ask themselves whether this relationship is manufactured, created for the sake of the "girl play," or is true love.

Karen Zacaras was recently hailed by American Theater Magazine as one of the ten most-produced playwrights in the US. Her award-winning plays include The Copper Children, Destiny of Desire, Native Gardens, The Book Club Play, Legacy of Light, Mariela in the Desert, The Sins ...

Arugula Suarez just wants to fit in. But it's not easy when you're a sixteen-year-old alien from the planet Zlagdor. Stuck in a world where the only things that make sense are roller derby and salad, Arugula and her father, Nancy, must find out what it means to be human before time runs out for Planet Earth.

"The play weaves the human condition into each zany and sometimes tragic moment as gracefully as an Amazonian Jammer weaves amongst the gang of Blockers, scoring point after point as the audience's hearts break and elate."

Play Like a Girl+ Piedmont is just one part of the Piedmont Recreation Department's efforts to empower girls through athletics. In 2023, the Department's Title XI basketball jersey initiative was recognized by the California Park & Recreation Society as "Outstanding Justice, Equity,, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Program or Event of the Year."

Progress is being made in representation for women, POC, and LGBTQ+ people in Warhammer games. No doubt, this is a worthwhile development (even despite the slightly scary, very politically charged backlash). Even in the absence of this, the most meaningful inclusion happens at your local store and within the community itself.

In hobby spaces like Warhammer which have developed an unfortunate boys club reputation, it's just as important to see female players around the table as it is to see female minis on it. In order for that to happen, they have to feel accepted and welcomed.

So make an effort to engage new players, be kind, and try be receptive to their questions. As turns out, it's pretty easy to stop a teenage girl from playing Warhammer if you don't.

The overall Department gender equity goals are to encourage the participation of youth in sports and recreation programs and to; provide opportunities to youth for recreation, address under-representation in sports programs where one gender or another is not adequately represented, improve the representation of females assigned to the administration of sports and recreation programs, improve the representation of females in positions of leadership, increase the number of female coaches, referees, instructors, mentors and other role models, and to ensure that the Department is equitable in its distribution of resources for all youth.

Start them early. It's important for girls to become involved in sports at an early age. A University of Virginia study showed that if a girls does not participate in sports by the age of 10, there is only a 10% chance that she will be physically active when she is 25. But how do you get her interested in sports and keep them interested?

Female athletes don't appear in the media spotlight nearly as often as male athletes. As a result, girls sometimes have a hard time imagining themselves in sports careers. A good role model shows girls what's possible; that females can participate in sports and succeed. A good role model could be an Olympic medalist, a sports writer or your next-door neighbor who runs regularly.

It's important to find the right sport, because a girl is not participating in a sport she likes, she probably won't stick with it. Ask questions to determine her motives and interests. Is she interested in a team or individual sports? Would she prefer soccer over swimming? Find out what she likes to do and what she thinks she's good at doing. Would she like to try something new? What kind of goals does she have? Does she like to compete, or does she just enjoy the activity? Also, try to expose her to a variety of sports and encourage her to find the right one.

Involvement in sports is a means of staying in shape and staying healthy. What we don't always realize is that physical activity also helps girls gain competence and self-confidence. Sports offer girls opportunity to develop leadership skills and work as part of a team toward a common goal. Because many girls come out of adolescence with a lower self-image and less confidence in themselves and their future than boys, confidence building is very important for girls.

A recent study of adolescent girls found that physical activity increases self-esteem, promotes a positive body image and helps girls feel better about themselves. Most adolescent girls say they enjoy physical activity, and girls who participate in sports are more willing to take risks and try new activities. These positive benefits of physical activity can carry over into academics and other activities, too.

USA Hockey recommends that girls should stop playing with boys when, due to size or speed, the player would be at risk of injury due to full-contact checking. Not all girls are big enough or have the confidence to play with boys once the boys have hit puberty. Each player must decide for themselves how long they are comfortable playing with boys from a safety perspective.

As noted in a previous post, it is rare for a female player to play college hockey while only playing on boys club or high school teams (other than at national development camps). So clearly from a recruiting perspective, there is a significant benefit to being scouted by college teams. Coaches rarely attend boys events to watch a single female player. The advice I have heard from several college coaches is a hybrid, where a female player can play on a boys team as their primary winter season team and either play girls during spring/summer tournaments or, if permitted, double roster on a girls team during the regular season (e.g. play girls AAA and boys high school).
