Hello,

Is there any news about the Management console re-writing. I have to say that I have seen some demo of RAP today and that is impressive. In summary you can write the UI as a simple JFace UI and deploying it in Virgo the OSGI base JEE of Eclipse. This is server based, this is java but this is fast developing and simple !!
Demos: http://eclipse.org/rap/demos/
Rap : http://eclipse.org/rap/
Tutorial: http://eclipsesource.com/blogs/tutorials/developing-web-application-bundles-with-rap-and-virgo/
Artciles: http://eclipse.org/rap/articles/

What do you think ?

Sabri.

Hey,

Looks interesting, but overkill for us. Keeping it lightweight is the reason we're getting rid of ext4js, is it not? We already have the server side. We just need the client side: a bit of HTML, a bit of CSS, a bit of Javascript.

I'm really not a fan *at all* of this stuff anyway (UI in your code, etc) so I may be biased, though.

Actually I am not a big fa neither. I am also thinking about re-writing it in SWT or SWING !!
I mean if simplicity and lightweight solutions must be preferred, why not implementing it in JAVA desktop apps ? I am deeply disappointed by the fact we took 1 months (1 year of partial dev) for something that would have been implemented in 4h in SWT or SWING.

OK let's investigate the candidate technologies for the management console but we I also think that we should definitely think about JAVA desktop light client.

I assume that the back-end is still relevant even if we consider a desktop app, right?

I disagree with your assessment Sabri:
1) I don't think there was 1 month spent on it; I'd say it's much less than that (rather around a few days).
Let's be honest: it just hasn't been a priority for us yet.
2) A year ago, there was no roq-backend, which was kind of necessary to do the web console.
It's there now, and it's solid.

All in all, the step back is not that huge, and I'm pretty confident we can get something running quickly.

As a side note, I agree with Maxime; the relevance of a desktop app is independent of the web app.

Sure, the roq-backend is clearly still relevant. Let's continue this round of evaluation of UI technos and let's take a decision soon. The management console is clearly a mandatory component to spread the RoQ adoption and starting showing demos.
Can we fix a deadline for which we are going to choose the next steps ?

Sabri.
