Hi Spencer,

I am writing to see if you have any ideas about who we can contact in San Jose regarding a big opportunity to get a new local nonprofit radio station going locally there.

The Federal Communications Commission will be accepting applications this October for new Low Power FM (LPFM) radio stations across the country. It was a decade-long fight to create this opportunity, so we are looking for people in every place where licenses are available. We want to make sure that every major city in the country has a strong applicant group, but we dont have one in your area.

LPFM radio licenses are free and only licensed to not-for-profit organizations. Because they are relatively easy to start and operate, they put valuable media infrastructure in the hands of a wide-range of community groups. We find that the best-suited groups are those with strong local roots, some volunteer capacity to take on new projects, and a mission to serve their community.

Know anyone that fits the bill? The Prometheus Radio Project is providing support to community groups in navigating the FCC application process and the nuts and bolts of starting stations. To get support, groups need to fill out ourapplicant group profile. You can also check out this guidebook to get a sense of what it takes to get started:http://www.freepress.net/sites/default/files/resources/launch-your-own-LPFM-station.pdf

Please share widely and forward along any suggestions so that we can follow up! I've copied my colleague Candace here and feel free to contact her directly if you have questions, or youd like to discuss further.

Best,

Hi Spencer,

We have had the same request from 2 other people who have been unable to pitch the idea at a board meeting.

We might be open to it if there is a person or group who can manage and structure it, with SJPJC just responsible for a show or two.

I mentioned it in case someone could find the right person or group who has both the desire and the wherewithal to make it happen -- with modest contributions perhaps from the San José Peace and Justice Center and our Community Partners.

However, the demise of the "48 South 7th" project provides one example about how difficult this could be -- especially since creating such a new nonprofit radio station would require substantially more money and time than the "48 South 7th" project.
