Common Cause, the Koch brothers, Props 30 and 32 from last year, a South Bay chapter of Common Cause, and our Op Ed?

Hello, All:

1. Can our Op Ed end with a call to action that mentions a newly
formed South San Francisco Bay Chapter of Common Cause? If we'd like to
use the Peace Center as the home for monthly meetings, it suggests we
may want to postpone publication until after the next Peace Center Board
meeting, Nov. 12. If yes, I'd want to presell it to the board, maybe
even getting them involved in drafting the Op Ed.

2. What do you think about mentioning the Common Cause suit
against the Koch Brothers (see below)? I think we should.

3. Has anyone confirmed Mayor Reed's comment about more outside
than local money in San José elections? Whom should we ask? Kerry
Hamilton? Reed's staff? I think we should ask that as well.

Thanks,
Spencer

Spencer,

*We followed the money trail… and found the Kochs
*
Remember the big story in 2012 – a pair of Arizona non-profit groups had
funneled $15 million from anonymous donors into two California ballot
initiative campaigns?

Thanks to a complaint filed by California Common Cause, our state Fair
Political Practices Commission initiated an investigation of Americans
for Responsible Leadership.

*This Thursday, the commission just announced a record-breaking fine* -
$1 million - to be paid by Americans for Responsible Leadership and the
Center to Protect Patient Rights. Both groups are linked to billionaire
industrialists and conservative activists Charles and David Koch.

The secret money was used for advertisements promoting the defeat of
Proposition 30, a tax measure pushed by Gov. Jerry Brown, and the
approval of Proposition 32, an initiative that would have curbed the
ability of labor unions to raise money for political campaigns.

/Citizens United/ may have opened the floodgates for special interest
money to come in, but your support has allowed California Common Cause
to research these political money laundering schemes, identify the
suspicious donations and alert the commission.

*We need that help again now so we can stay on watch in next year’s
midterm elections -- please give today!

<http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=brJNJ4PGK8JNLYOKH&s=ktJUI0MLKnJXL7NSLwG&m=hgLQIYMxHeLWJcJ>Hundreds of millions of dollars in secret money went into campaigns across the country last year. If you believe, like I do, that our democracy depends on fully informed voters, *I hope you will consider supporting our efforts today so we can make California a model for political transparency. <http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=flKVKgNWIcIVJbN1F&s=ktJUI0MLKnJXL7NSLwG&m=hgLQIYMxHeLWJcJ>*

I’m all for joining with CC. (We could put on whatever hat we need for any particular project: DM, CC, RS). If we do, we’d need to let Helen know, before this op-ed comes out.

Also, I think the Merc had a deadline for the oped, which may come before we decide on joining CC or making Peace Center our meet-up home.

If so, do we want to vote online (via email) or would people rather meet in person to discuss, at our next meeting, or before?

Best,
Georgia

Count on my support.   As a standalone DreamMenders we do not have critical mass and we are stagnant as an organization.   We need CC as a catalyst of change for us
