Hi: I would like to add another layer if the group is to
take action because a number of social welfare groups are
stating they will ask for exemptions as to reveal their
donors would put them in jeopardy (example, NARAL Pro Choice
America) Possibly anti-choice groups will do the same.
Other groups will also feel they must protect their donors
for various reasons, some regarding threat of injury; others
concerned with threats of big donors being outed.

Before we contact our congresspersons I might suggest that
we meet with some of these organizations and learn of past
attacks on them and their current fears. It seems to me
that there are some groups, both liberal and conservative,
that feel threatened with bodily injury -- and their history
proves it.

There are other groups that want exemption because big
donors want to stay anonymous. I have less sympathy for
them. What do you think?

Betsy

I agree with your prescription, Betsy.  Engagemet may take more effort, but it sure beats having opinions based upon fantasy, both in terms of the authenticity with which one engages others and the example of fact-based action instead of ideology-based action.

Best,
Bruce

Yes, Betsy, I agree, though because I feel progressives tend not to be violent, I have less sympathy for conservative groups remaining anonymous. Jan

Bruce and all: Doing some research before taking a stand is
usually helpful. You might notice that many of our laws are
written with the goal of treating one group differently from
another: our tax code for example. So there is a precedent
for evaluating who are affected by particular legislation.
In the case of 501c4 I would hope that the differentiation
would be based on good social science data and not on
special interests. Betsy
