As I began reading, I saw a few familiar vocab. words (pop. culture-
p. 3, enclave- p. 61). A lot of the facts about fast food in the
introduction didn't come as a surprise to me. Like when they stated
that, "The typical American now consumes approximately three
hamburgers and four orders of french fries every week."( pg. 6) When
people live these on-the-go lifestyles, like we do today, it's a whole
lot easier to go and order something at a fast food restaurant instead
of sitting down and trying to eat at a real restaurant or even cook a
meal of your own at home. Not to mention it is cheaper. But as stated
on p. 10, we tend not to think about the long term effects of fast
food.
I also found it interesting how most of the fast food restaurant
founders didn't complete high school. Some didn't even make it to high
school. They entered into the competiotion with no degree in business
or even a diploma, stole ideas from their competitors, and made their
way to success.
Also on p. 69, Schlosser described how different restaurants have
different methods of making their food. Now I'm really not surprised
at the methods being used, because in a socirty where your food has
become more demanding, you have to create a more efficient method of
cooking/making your food to keep up with the demand. I quite frankly
don't have a problem with it, but people are acting so shocked when
the find out how the food is being made because advertisements tell
you otherwise. Now common sense would tell you that they have to
embellish a tad in order to persuade you to buy their product, and
that there is no way that every fast food chain hand-cooks everything
or uses all natural methods to create their product.

I agree with John. Most of the stated in the first part of Fast Nation
did not surprise me except for, "The McDonald's Corporation has become
a powerful symbol of America's service economy, which is now
responsible for 90 percent of the country's new jobs."(p. 4) This
shows how much fast food restaurants have become a part of our everday
lives and has been embedded into our culture, "The Golden Arches are
now more widely recognized than the Christian cross." (p. 5) this
quote also backs up my point. It was very awkward that the founders of
the fast food chains barely had a high school education and started
off with nothing and ended up with everything by pursueing ideas. As
people have become prone to fast food, they have stopped cooking
because of the wide availability of fast food. the companies have had
to adjust to the demand by altering genetics of the animals and plants
to produce more to fulfill the needs of their costumers. Although this
may not be ggood in the llong run, you won't find out until then. Fast
Food Nation has opened my eyes to the effects and problems fast food
chains do not discuss.

I feel you on that, mickie ds has become basically a self sustaining
mega god in corporation. But what really interested me was how it
started from is humble begin in Karchers head. Besides that its weird
how over the decades the "typical" american values have changed from
the basic house wife working dad all american son and the girl next
door daughter wit a dog n cat to a fast paced world where u get your
breakfast lunch and dinner from around the corner and not even know
where or what the "food" is, bummer for most because the basic
principle all of our fast food restuarants started with has been
broken beyond repair...Great food great prices n great service... wow
the whole idea of Fast Food is a bunch of propaganda to me

I agree with John also. The part of Fast Food Nation, that came most
shockingly to me was that most of all these men mention didn't even
graduate high school. Yet, using their knowledge of the average
American consumer, they have became very successful businessmen of
high chain fast food companies. Also with success comes the down falls
of the chain. The CKE stock fell in 1988 causing millions of debt and
even his fellow board members (Clark) to dismiss him. (p.25-26) This
showed me that even though he caused there success greed and hard
times can turn even the best of friends against each other. Another
point is how the cost of food at fast food places has exceedingly
taking over consumer's money. The prices of quality hamburgers were
only 15 cents (p.19) and now for a "HIGH QUALITY HAMBURGER", in the
modern day, which we all know is processed is way more. You will use
that 15 cents for tax only maybe. (Just my personal comparison of
prices). Also, to draw the consumers attention, they make sure they
have alluring signs in bright neon color and catchy slogans along with
mascots we all recognize. I must say this was a great way to get their
business "booming". As well as having more than one location,
preferably off of highways, to get more attention for hungry people
who are in a rush. Also, they have made special children meals that
include a little nice size toy. Yet, now the meaning of fast food has
been converted to a new meaning of processed meat placed on conveyer
belts and emerge from a boiler and with in seconds are fully cooked.
(p.69) Everything is frozen and not fresh as once thought to be. Our
food isnt being prepared it is being assembled(p.69) like a barbie
doll made in China. Yet, we pay more for less the quality. I think
this whole Fast Food business has turned for the worse leading to
unhealthy people around the world. Lastly, I believe it would be
healthy and save us all more money to cook our own food or be
vegetarians.
