We will be continuing to work on Unit 2 on kindness. This week we will be reading “The Paper Crane” by Molly Bangs. This is a folk tale from Japan. This is the story of a store owner who is kind to a stranger, even when he has very little himself. The stranger then repays the store owner with a most precious gift. Ask your child what this gift was. You can also ask your child what moral they learned from the story.
We will be starting our next unit on writing a friendly letter. We will begin by looking at the parts of a friendly letter and continue from there.
We finished James and the Giant Peach last week and will be finishing the movie this week. We will also be starting a new tale: Annie and the Old One. This is the story about a Navajo tribe.
In math we will be finishing unit 3. We will be working more with patterns that follow two different directional patterns. Then we will work more on getting and giving change from a purchased item. We will review: bar graphs, different combination to make a certain amount in coins, addition, likelihood, word problems, subtraction, names for a number, function boxes, and temperature.
In science we will continue looking at animal life cycles. We will focus on why animals that are the same look different. We will also be starting a new unit on nutrition.
In social studies we will continue working with the compass rose and looking at patriotic symbols. We will also be focusing on the meaning of Veteran’s Day!
We will also look at how some colors are warm while others are cool.
We will also be taking our first trimester district assessment. This will measure how much the kids have learned thus far.

Assessments: Spelling, vocabulary, dictation, “The Paper Crane” comprehension.
Friday November 11, 2011 No School Veteran’s Day!!
