We will also be starting on Unit 2 in Open Court. This unit is on kindness. Our stories will relate to characters acting in a kind way. Last week the kids were asked to do something kind for someone else. This week they are being asked to pay attention when someone is kind to them. We will be talking about it during class. Our story this week is called “Elves and the Shoemaker” by Freya Littledale. This is the story of a poor couple whom are helped by some elves. This is the story we will be seeing when we go on a field trip in December. The couple figures out a way to be kind to repay the elves. Ask your child what the cobbler and his wife do to repay the elves.
We will be working on our final drafts for our small moment story. Their stories should be at least a paragraph. It should have a beginning, middle and an end. It should have at least one example of sensory detail. It should be about a small moment in their life (not an entire weekend). It should be indented with proper capitalization and end of sentence punctuation. On Tuesday part of their homework will be to read their final draft to you. You are free to help them with as much of this as you wish. However, please do not try to teach more than this.
We will continue with James on his adventure with the Giant Peach. Recently, the seagulls have saved James but they are floating through the air. Where will they land?
In math we will be starting unit 3. We will be working more with place value (focusing on ones, tens and hundreds place). We will also work more with coins and focus on how to buy things using change. We will also be focusing more on telling time. We will also be creating bar graphs. We will look at how to follow patterns that have two different rules. We will review: even and odd numbers, ordering numbers, likelihood, comparing numbers, following patterns, addition facts, place value, money, tallies, temperature, word problems, and names for a number.
In science we will continue looking at animal life cycles. We will look at how animals get traits from their parents. We will learn that some traits are learned while others are inherited. We will learn that even though two babies have the same parents they do not always look the same. This is because every being is an individual. Key question: Why do babies and mothers share traits?
In social studies we will continue working with the compass rose and looking at patriotic symbols.
We will also look at how some colors are warm while others are cool.
