Coming This Week…….. January 16, 2012

This week we will be reading “They Thought They Saw Him”. This is a fictional story about how a chameleon hides within his surroundings. This story is based upon a Mexican folktale. Ask your child how the chameleon seems to disappear when being chased by his predators.

In phonics and dictation we will be practicing: the long a sound spelt a_e, and ai_ The long e sound spelt ee, ea, and e. We will also be learning about diphthongs and how two vowels can make one sound. The diphthongs that we are working on are oy, ou and oi.

This writing focus for this unit will be on “How to”…. The kids will be writing about things they know how to do. We will be writing directions that tell the reader how to do something. We will be starting to outline our how to writing. Ask your child what they are writing about.

We will be learning about the difference between complete, fragment and run on sentences.

In math we will be working on Chapter 6. This chapter focuses on word problems and begins to introduce multiplication and division. There is also a lot of review in this chapter. At this point we are half way through the math book.

This week we will be learning more about Martin Luther King Jr. and about Chinese New Year.

In Science we will be working on Chapter 4. This chapter is on using our natural resources. Specifically, we will be focusing on how people use water in their every day lives. Key vocabulary this week includes: irrigation. Ask your child how he or she uses water everyday!
