For the next two weeks we will be reading “Animal Camouflage”. This is an expository (non-fiction) text filled with real world photographs of animals in their natural environment. We will be finding creatures that are really camouflaged in their environment. Ask your student if they were able to spot the white-furred rabbit hiding in the snow.
In phonics and dictation we will be practicing: how to make words plural by adding s, es, or ies, this includes changing a y to and I and adding es on words like bunny, long vowel sounds, the ea spelling for the long e sound, prefixes mis and pre, the suffixes ing and er.
This writing focus for this unit will continue to be on “How to”…. Some students will be rewriting their how to based on conferences between your child and I. You can ask your child if they need to rewrite their how to. We will also be doing another how to in class together as a class.
We will be learning about subject verb agreement. An example would be: The cat crawls on the floor vs. The cats crawl on the floor. Add an s to the verb or don’t depending on if the subject is plural or not.
We will also be continuing with Mr. Popper’s Penguins in class.
In math we will be continuing with unit 7. We did not finish unit 7 last week so we will be finishing it this week. We will be focusing on mean, median and mode. We will be testing on Wednesday. We will be reviewing: money, shapes, basic fractions, addition, multiplication, and subtraction word problems, rounding, greater than, less than and equal to, ordering numbers, temperature, time, number patterns, addition and subtraction.
In Science we will be working on Chapter 5. This chapter is on objects in motion. Specifically, we will be focusing on describing an object’s motion. The key vocabulary for this section is motion and speed.
FYI
This is a crazy week with all the half days and days off so, homework packets will be for this week and for next week. They do not need to turn them in until February 24, 2012. This gives them two weeks to complete them!
Valentine’s Day Party
We will be having a Valentine’s Day Party on Tuesday from 12-1:15. If you wish for your child to participate then they should bring 28 Valentines that are signed. They should not have “To” Names on them. It makes it much easier to pass them out if they do not have names on them, plus it keeps from having hurt feelings. Also, if you signed up to bring something remember Tuesday is the day!
