Hi Gavin & Arika-

I hope that you are doing very well.  I have a little bit of positive news that might help a few postdocs who are looking for support to help them complete their project work, and I'd like your help by spreading the word.

I am leading a pilot project with Public Invention through June to identify a small cohort of postdocs whose research has been interrupted due to federal funding cuts, and who need assistance with finding and securing funding, project admin & management, leasing facilities & equipment, publication, data management planning, and other research administration details necessary to complete a project that has been discontinued due to DOGE cuts. Our pilot objectives are to:
(1) recruit a small cohort of DOGEd postdocs that want this type of support;
(2) identify suitable sponsors with current solicitations that are likely to fund our proposals; and
(3) determine capacity gaps within our initiative that need to be addressed before moving forward.

A few relevant details:
  • It is free.  Public Invention is a 501(c)3 nonprofit open hardware research institute.  We will not and cannot charge investigators for services.
  • We do not directly fund research or hire researchers, but we will provide all of the non-research institutional support that a researcher would expect from the university.
  • We do not guarantee funding.
  • We aim to cooperate with the University and provide this service as an emergency action and safety net for researchers in crisis.

We are capable of supporting research within the following areas:
  • Computer science: software engineering, theoretical CS, databases, graphics
  • Electrical engineering: small-scale solar engineering, PCBs, embedded systems, networking
  • Biomedical engineering: devices, global tracking systems, ventilators, ventilator testers, oxygen generators, point-of-care diagnostics
  • Mechanical engineering: structural engineering, ferrofluids, CAD modeling
  • Applied mathematics: solid geometry, optimization methods
  • Basic physics: low-energy machinery, computational fluid dynamics

We only have a month to achieve our pilot objectives, so please share widely with whomever you see fit and do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, ideas, and help!  Interested postdocs should contact me at f...@collaboratory.science.

With warm regards and great thanks, as always-
