Hello Katy -

Thank you very much indeed for sending me the quarry's Environmental Management Plan.

My goodness this is depressing stuff.  If the plan was actually followed, the mine would resemble what gardeners call 'double digging', where top soil is preserved from one trench so as to be laid into another trench, in a cycle.  The idea seems to be that a pit no deeper than 4m, no longer than 150m and no wider than 30m should be dug.  No clay stockpiling is permitted in the plan.

This is so far from what is happening that the EMP can be dismissed as entirely ineffective.

The quarry is operated as a deep open cast mine, much larger in surface area than the 'strip' arrangement proposed, and at least 10m deep.  The top soil has been removed wholesale, and who knows where it is now.  The largest structure on the quarry site that is visible from the outside is a huge stockpile of clay.

The situation is clearly completely out of hand.  The Department of Minerals and Energy is clearly not enforcing this EMP.  And I will take it up with them, you will be sure, though I will value your help and assistance.

Sincerely yours,

Mal Morrow

Wow. Well plenty of obvious evidence of contraventions. What happens now?

Hi -

Well, I think we must brief Ossie, who is, if you like, the senior landowner in the area, and the rest of the landowners and ask their advice.

The EMP is supposed to be enforced by the DME.  They are not doing this.  From what I have heard, making them do so will be troublesome, but we must press on and find a way.

And at the very least, the current situation must be brought into account when the DME considers the application for the extension of the permit.

In my personal view, our objective ought to be to get the DME to dismiss a further application to quarry, and to close down the mine completely, since it is unreasonable to suppose that the quarry operators will carry on their operation with any more environmental consideration than they have done in the past 12 years.

If the community agrees with me about that, then how we could go about pressing this point is for my research and action, I suppose.

Tx && rgds,

Mal

Get them to repair the road first then shut them down?
