HI all

Last nights sms from Karen to say that Styles and a customer had seen a baboon on our road is somewhat worrying.

Seeing as most of us keep our rubbish in a pile somewhere on the farms, that would be a big attraction.

Dogs may ward them off but if it feels at all threatened, it could kill a dog.

Karen said she will report to nature conservation if it is seen again but I think we should all keep our eyes peeled?

Regards,
Carol

Forgot to mention that the info below info came from from Fiona, my feeling is basically that it needs to find another home, and preferably fast.

One baboon?  Is that even likely, as they're social animals?

I suspect we need guidance from Cape Nature Conservation on this one, as I'm fairly sure that it's illegal to do anything with or about baboons, or other wild animals, without official assistance and guidance.

I'll see what info I can get from them at some point soon.

Tx && rgds,

Mal

One baboon would probably mean a young male who is potentially dominant and has left his troop as he cannot be the dominant there – he will roam until he finds a troop of his own.  They can travel very long distances.

Not suggesting we do anything at the moment actually as he (?) has only just been sighted and may already have moved on.  Perhaps alert nature conservation that there has been a sighting so they can be aware of his presence in the area and perhaps monitor his progress?  There may be no reason to do anything else.
