When I look at the font list in OpenOffice in Ubuntu there are dozens of fonts that all look the same. They are obviously there for various non-latin alphabets but I have not installed those language packs so the fonts all appear as plain sans. It would be nice to get rid of the ones I don't use to shorten the list and make it easier to find the ones I want. It would also speed up the loading time of the word processor. I would also like to install a few replacement fonts so that they are available to all users, (ie. not just by putting them in my .fonts folder).
I found the 'font-manager' package useful to disable (without removing) these international fonts. This seems to solely disable the font for the current user, leaving them in the list for other accounts.
sudo apt-get install font-manager works. Note that as of early 14.04 if you go to Ubuntu Software Center and look up the font-manager package it will give a message about unsolved unmet dependencies due to font-manager requiring lower versions of some dependent packages than the versions installed already in 14.04. Never fear, just use apt-get instead.
You have to install the font your system for it to be detected. Download the font from the following link -n17979-kruti-dev-010.aspx Then move the font file to your /usr/share/fonts/truetype directory. Hope this helps.
Did you know Fedora packages several freely-licensed fonts? There are several supplementary fonts to preview and try out that are not installed by default.Like all fonts on Fedora, these fonts are not encumbered with licenses or restrictions.
An added benefit of packaged fonts is they give you control over the font package in the future. You will receive future updates and can easily uninstall it later if you decide it is not the font for you.
Unpackaged fonts are not managed by a package manager. You will not automatically receive updates or optimizations. If a font is provided by a distribution package, you should always use a packaged version of a font.
User fonts are installed for an individual user.Only the user who installs the fonts on the machine will be able to use these fonts. This is also convenient if you do not have superuser (i.e. root) access on the machine.

But now, the problem we see is that the text you added doesn't match with the text shown on the simulator. That's why I highly recommend you to try other fonts to see which one can be compatible. I tried with an other font I fount here : ( +Serif+Devanagari?subset=devanagari&query=Devanagari) and it looks to be running fine.
Also, similar to Windows operating systems, I want to be able to select the language through a settings option and then change the langue of text in all screens as per the selection made. Please advice.
I downloaded Devanagari font (kruti-dev-021.ttf) and tried implementing a simple example. I put the font in ...\TouchGFX\assets\fonts folder and followed the example you provided in adding the language. However, TouchGFX doesn't recognize the characters from the Davanagari script and showing the fallback character when I click on Hindi button.
