Hi,

If anyone is flying and interested, our community group Save Rome's Central Park would love footage of the 80 acres of Burwell Creek Natural Area. We are trying to prevent the development into a strip mall of the city-owned environmentally important wetlands and old-growth forest and trails that goes from the old duck pond location at Turner McCall and Riverside Drive across from Kentucky Fried Chicken to the senior center on Riverside Drive. We are hoping the degree of flooding will highlight in the developers' minds the expense of filling in and diverting the huge amount of water when we have major floods.

Also, Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) is

"Join CRBI this Friday, Jan. 1, at 1 p.m. for an exploration of the Burwell Creek wetlands and floodplain, some 60-acres of city-owned property that is slated for development into a regional shopping center. Recent high water has filled the proposed building site with 1 to 12 feet for water, and the best way to explore it now is via canoe or kayak. When you've paddled this land, you'll ask yourself: "who in their right mind would build a shopping center on this property?" This trip is free and open to the public. To reserve a canoe or kayak, e-mail Joe Cook at jc...@coosa.org Meet at the Burwell Creek parking area for Ridge Ferry Park at the intersection of Turner McCall Blvd. and Riverside Parkway (behind Starbuck's)."

Are you still interested in having this done? Is this volunteer or commercial?

Hi George,

    Thank you for your response.

We were hoping to get footage of the area during the Christmas 2015 flood, but we would welcome any footage on a volunteer basis.

Sorry we don't have funds for this. We are just a bunch of people who would rather see a beautiful and environmentally important natural area right in the middle of our city and adjacent to our other parks preserved rather than see the mature forest and wetlands destroyed and turned into another strip mall – especially when there are numerous developed and vacant properties available.

The best way we can stop it is for people to contact our city commissioners ( http://www.romefloyd.com/rome/commission ) and let them know they do not want the property developed.

Check out our replete photo albums of this beautiful, publicly-owned and publicly-accessible natural area on our facebook page...
