Global Mobilization Day - Sunday, September 15, 2013 5:00 pm in front of the Toronto Stock Exchange, 130 King St. W. Romanian-Canadians will show solidarity with protests taking place in Romania and cities worldwide against a draft bill which will allow Canadian-controlled mining company Gabriel Resources Ltd. to start the largest to date open cast gold mine in Europe. This bill has 20 special provisions which will grant Gabriel Resources Ltd. the decision power on the handling of public goods, unique cultural and historical sites of international value, and the freedom to raze four mountains.
As of September 1 2013, the same requests have been voiced daily by tens of thousands of protesters in Romania and around the world: rejection of the draft bill, inclusion of Rosia Montana on Romania’s list for UNESCO, and banning of cyanide mining in Romania. Romania shares many international waters and has an earthquake profile that makes this project a bad geographic choice for the unprecedented amount of cyanide intended to be used and stored in the open. We urge global citizens to join us and push for the rejection of this bill because of the ecological, social and cultural hazards of international scale associated with this massive project.
