Dear friends of the Romanian Film Festival in Madison,

Once again, for the fourth time in our short history, the Romanian Film Festival was a successful event, and was received with more enthusiasm than ever. We seem to be growing with each annual edition and this year was no exception. Spring weather and a false fire alarm notwithstanding, our viewers were not deterred from watching the Romanian films and addressing their questions to our special guest, film critic Irina-Margareta Nistor, to whom we are grateful for her introductions to the films and answers to the many questions from the audience.

The local press dedicated a few articles to our event, and in case you missed them at the time, I will be posting the links to their publications below. Our special thanks go to Rob Thomas of Capital Times/77 Square, Mark Riechers and Scott Gordon of Onion’s AV Club Madison, Dan Sullivan of The Daily Cardinal (and the blog Cinemadison) for their articles, and Ken Burns of Isthmus for featuring us in the Daily Page.

This year, even the Romanian press noticed some of the local articles and were published in the online editions of the newspapers Adevarul (The Capital Times) and Financiarul (The Daily Cardinal) - see below, in addition to news releases from several agencies.

My deep and sincere thanks to everyone involved in organizing the festival: Irina Andreea Malcea (Romanian Cultural Institute-Bucharest), our project coordinator and Stefana Marmureanu, the head of the Visual Arts department, for their support for the project and maintaining its presence in Madison; Jennifer Tishler of CREECA at the UW and their entire team, Nancy Heingartner, Julia Vasylenko, and Alec Luhn for helping with logistics and promotion; Dana Carina Baiu for her webdesign work and constant dedication; Jennifer Holmes and the staff at MMoCA for hosting the event in their beautiful venue; Wes Cash from IATSE Local 251 for being our technical support and more at each edition of the festival; Daniela Banu and Casian Pantea of the Romanian Student Organization “From Romania” for hosting our webpage; Cristel Baiu for his constant support from the very beginning; Meg Hamel, the director of the Wisconsin Film Festival, for her continuing support and encouragement; Ecaterina Dimancea Dumbraveanu and Ariadna Ponta at RCI Bucharest for their continued interest in our festival even after ceasing to manage it; Heather Heckman at the UW Cinematheque for helping us with the promotion; and last, but not least, Oana Radu and Stefania Cerchedau at the New York office of RCI for their help with additional screeners for the press.

Many thanks to all of you who are always ready to help with a word of encouragement, spreading the word and coming to see the films. It is for you, the wonderful and cinema savvy Madison audience that we are trying to keep this festival going and we are grateful for your continuing interest, support and curiosity about all things Romanian that brings you in and always in larger numbers - over 600 this time to be more precise.

We are grateful to the Romanian Cultural Institute and CREECA for making our film festival an annual presence in Madison and we hope to see you next year in March.

With many thanks,

Screen quality: Romanian filmmakers persevere

They're small in number and short of dollars, but Romanian filmmakers have made a huge mark on the international film scene in the past few years.
One of the most honored films at last year's Cannes Film Festival was the anthology film "Tales from a Golden Age," a collaboration of several of the Eastern European country's most celebrated filmmakers.
Madison audiences have been able to keep tabs on the growing Romanian New Wave through the free Romanian Film Festival. This spring's festival, which takes place Thursday through Saturday at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, is no exception, showing that Romanian film is here to stay.
The series is funded by the Romanian Cultural Institute and facilitated by UW-Madison's Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia.

Exploring this weekend’s Romanian Film Festival

Today, tomorrow and  Saturday the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art will host an event that, despite being an annual occurrence, has a relatively small profile amongst even the film-savviest Madisonians: The Romanian Film Festival. The emergence of the so-called Romanian new wave, a young cinema born nearly 30 years after similar movements popped up throughout eastern Europe, is one of the more curious developments in recent film history. Whether “new wave” is the best name for this movement remains open for debate; the first film screening in the festival is a French documentary, “The New Wave of the Romanian Cinema” (screens 6:30 p.m. Thursday), whose title seems to imply that the movement itself has embraced its contentious moniker.

The battle of the sexes rages on at the Romanian Film Festival
by Mark Riechers

The shockwaves from the fall of the Iron Curtain still course through Romania's contemporary filmmakers, who absorb them with movies that range from tragic to serio-comic. Not surprisingly, this only helps to shake up the old-fashioned tug-of-war between men and women, not to mention some backward attitudes. This week’s fourth annual Romanian Film Festival (running Thursday through Saturday at the Madison Museum Of Contemporary Art) features 11 films covering everything from dead hookers to learning to drive stick while being mugged. Although the festival doesn’t necessarily intend to focus on the theme of changing gender roles and the conflict that comes with them, the films The A.V. Club watched ahead of time included plenty of male behavior that makes your average drunken jock-brah look like a militant feminist.
