How did writers and artists view the intersection of architecture and race in the modernist era?

Tall buildings emerged in growing cities to house and manage the large and racially diverse populations of migrants and immigrants flocking to their centers following Reconstruction. Beginning with Chicago's early 10-story towers and concluding with the 1931 erection of the 102-story Empire State Building, Adrienne Brown's The Black Skyscraper provides a detailed account of how scale and proximity shape our understanding of race.

Over the next half-century, as city skylines grew, American writers imagined the new urban backdrop as an obstacle to racial differentiation. Examining works produced by writers, painters, architects, and laborers who grappled with the early skyscraper's outsized and disorienting dimensions, Brown explores this architecture's effects on how race was seen, read, and sensed at the turn of the twentieth century.

A lucid, engaging look at how race was read in and through the skyscraper in early twentieth-century literature, The Black Skyscraper contributes in a substantial way to the growing body of literature that examines the connections between racial identity and the built environment.

This exciting study breaks important new ground in the field of race and architecture. Showing incisively not only how ideas about race shaped the emergence of the early skyscraper but also how the skyscraper in turn shaped the perception of race itself, Brown's book offers a fresh understanding of the often profound impact of the built environment on seeing, feeling, and performing racial identity. A must-read for anyone interested in the intersections between buildings, bodies, and books at the turn of the twentieth century.

While I loved the idea of doing these puzzles the first time I saw them, I was less enthusiastic about having these puzzles as a paper-and-pencil or computer generated activity because it is difficult to help develop perspective without actually building the skyscrapers. So, I created several templates that can easily be printed, where standard link-cubes can be placed on the grid structures.

Below is the front view. You might notice that many of the skyscrapers are not visible from this vantage point. For instance, the left column has only 3 skyscrapers visible. We can see two in the second column, one in the third column, and two in the far right column.

My students love the skyscraper puzzles and even want to spend their lunch completing them. I have a couple of questions regarding the above templates. When doing the Brainbasher version there seems to be only one solution, but my students have seemed to find multiple solutions to many of the above templates. Is this correct? We also found a 5 x 5 that does not have a solution because of the placement of a number one on a horizontal row and a four in the same column. I just want to make certain we are completing them correctly?? Please advise. I appreciate your work and response. Thank you so very much!

Yes. There is one error I need to correct. As for multiple possible answers, I encourage you to make sure that there are only 1 of each size skyscraper in each row and in each column. Regularly I see students with finished samples where the numbers show the correct number of skyscrapers from each angle, but the city does not follow the rules of 1 size per row/column. Let me know if you still see multiple possibilities.

I also write about the way that Black writers were imagining skyscrapers as sites of modernity. Black writers were interested in the skyscraper not just as white space that they were outside of, but as a place Black characters worked or visited, or took in as a tourist. For Black writers the skyscraper is a site for reimagining the city, reimagining democracy, reimagining a public space.

The skyscraper really emerges as a business structure, first, before it becomes a residential structure, because you had people who ran factories on the outskirts of the city deciding they needed another space, an office space downtown to be closer to other kinds of vendors and merchants.

Right. I was thinking about how in New York City in particular, in the postwar years, in the mid-century, they started building all these tall housing projects. Those are skyscrapers in a manner of speaking.

Next up in Dezeen's review of 2023, we look back at 10 headline-grabbing skyscrapers that completed this year, including a spiralling supertall, a 1970s retrofit and the highest building in Brooklyn. More

Revery Architecture has designed the Sen̓áḵw residential skyscrapers for the Squamish Nation's land in Vancouver, which will aid economic development and "benefit all Canadians", according to the Indigenous group. More

The highlighted areas are fields where the information from our data source is merged with the content of the template e.g. their name, the piece of content we want a link from, the shotgun skyscraper post we want a link to, etc.
