עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה; אֱלִילוּת

בָּרוּךְ שֶׁעָקַר עכו"ם (= עֲבוֹדַת כּוֹכָבִים) מֵאַרְצֵנוּ!  ברכות נד, רע"א (משנה) בדפוסים המצונזרים (בשאר המהדורות מופיע: "עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה")

Blessed… Who eradicated foreign worship from our land!

Although the literal translation of the phrase עֲבוֹדַת כּוֹכָבִים (and its abbreviation עכו"ם) is the worship of stars (and other heavenly bodies), it really refers to idolatry and all foreign worship (i.e., the worship of something or someone other than God as though it were God). The phrase עֲבוֹדַת כּוֹכָבִים, which does not appear in the original text of the Mishna and Talmud, has been used by Christian censorship instead of the phrase עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה to indicate that Christianity is not included.

אינני יודע מקום לדיון זה.

האם יש לברך שלא עשני עכו"ם או שעשני ישראל. כבר תוקן נוסח הצנזורה ע"י הפוסקים והכריעו כנוסח חז"ל שלא עשני גוי - חוץ משינוי ויעתר יצחק ובעקבותיו רוו"ה ועבו"י ישראל נכרי - עי' הערתי על לו"א.
