Hi,there. Can anyone give me instructions on how to change the fuel filter and change the spark plugs for a 1997 Discovery 1? Also, what is the best oil and transmission fluid I can use?

The fuel filter is near the passenger wheel well. Just takes a couple wrenches to remove it from the fuel line. Some gas will spill. It's unavoidable.

For spark plugs all you need is a deep socket of a size that matches your plugs, an extension and a ratchet. Do one plug at a time so you don't get the wires mixed up. Apply a bit of anti-seize on the new plug threads, but don't get any on the tip. Always start screwing the new plug into the block by hand so you don't cross thread and strip the block threads. Tighten the new plug with your socket and ratchet to the specs on the plug packaging. Do not over-tighten. Reconnect the wire and repeat until you're done.

I recommend Shell Rotella T 15w-40 engine oil in the summer and T6 5w-40 in the winter. Can be found most places. Walmart has good prices on it.

For the auto transmission I recommend Valvoline Maxlife DEX/MERC ATF. The fluid must be measured cold, running idle, on level ground.
