Rita is a Danish comedy-drama television series created by Christian Torpe for TV 2. It premiered in Denmark on 9 February 2012, and concluded on 20 July 2020, with 40 episodes broadcast over five seasons. Produced by SF Studios, the series was filmed in Rdovre, Zealand, and executive-produced by Keld Reinicke, Karoline Leth, Lars Bjrn Hansen, Birdie Bjerregaard, Christian Rank, Jennifer Green, and Torpe, who also served as head writer. All episodes are available internationally on streaming service Netflix[citation needed] , who partnered with TV 2 to produce the later three seasons, becoming a Netflix Original.

Mille Dinesen portrays the lead role of Rita Madsen, a headstrong and unconventional teacher and single mother who protects and helps her students but struggles to manage her own personal life. One of Rita's closest friends is portrayed by Lise Baastrup, the only other actor who appeared in all the episodes besides Dinesen; a spin-off centered on the character, Hjrdis, was broadcast between 18 May and 8 June 2015, consisting of four episodes. In the story, Hjrdis tries to put together a school play about bullying, one of the many social themes discussed throughout Rita.

Rita Madsen, a compulsive smoker, is an unconventional secondary education teacher who, according to her, chose this profession "to protect students from their parents". While she goes out of her way to advise and help her pupils, Rita's personal and family life seems to need the same kind of assistance. Her youngest son, Jeppe, is discovering his sexuality, while the older ones, Ricco and Molly, are experiencing the mishaps of adulthood. Other main characters include Hjrdis, a naive teacher who becomes Rita's best friend; Rasmus, the school headmaster with whom Rita has an on-again, off-again relationship; Helle, school counselor and former Rita's rival, Uffe, Hjrdis' husband and Jonas, a former school headmaster who is now a rather self-assured teacher at Rita's school.

A US remake was planned with a pilot episode filmed in 2013, starring Anna Gunn, but it was not picked up as a series.[14][15] In 2019, American premium cable network Showtime commissioned a pilot order for a remake starring Lena Headey. The series was to be a joint production between Showtime Networks and Platform One Media, with Torpe serving as showrunner and writing the pilot episode and Headey also acting as executive producer. This pilot was not picked up for a full series either.[16]

A Dutch remake called Tessa was made, airing in November 2015 on NPO 1, lasting only one season. The lead role was played by Thekla Reuten, following the storyline of Rita Season one, with only a few changes. The series has also been remade in France by TF1 as Sam, starring Mathilde Seigner in the title role for the first season. The second season of Sam entered production in 2017 with Natacha Lindinger replacing Seigner in the title role.[17] The show has aired seven seasons to date.[when?]

Rita is an English woman to whom Michael Bluth was attracted to and was briefly engaged. When Rita is first introduced, she is shown to have a secret. Arrested Development viewers are led to believe she may be a British spy, but in the end she is revealed to be an "MRF", or "Mentally Retarded Female." It's said by the narrator that she "had only mentally progressed to the level of a first grader."

Rita was born in Great Britain. Her disability stems from her parents being cousins. They were wealthy real estate investors and owned Wee Britain in Newport Beach. After her parents passed away, Rita inherited Wee Britain and moved into her apartment in California with her legal guardian Uncle Trevor. She attends Slowbrooke School and received plastic surgery with her inheritance. ("The Ocean Walker")

Her posh British accent often distracts people from realizing her below typical intelligence. She convinces Maeby to have the characters in her movie walk across the ocean, Lindsay that she should wear her clothes inside out, and G.O.B. that she can hold her breath for 20 minutes. ("The Ocean Walker")

Michael met Rita in Wee Britain while investigating his father's "light treason" and was smitten by her sweetness and British charm. ("For British Eyes Only") Rita turned out to be mentally challenged and Michael called off the wedding. ("The Ocean Walker")

Michael first saw Rita at a bar in Wee Britain. Immediately from when he set his eyes on her he thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. He asked her if she could help him retrieve some British government records with her British passport. The office was closed but Michael arranged a date with her. After being threatened by Rita's Uncle Trevor, Michael called off the date at Rita's school, thinking she was a teacher. Rita showed up at the courthouse and Michael asked her on another date, then swooped in to kiss her. ("For British Eyes Only")

Michael and Rita go on a date at Fat Ammy's and he lies to her, telling her that he doesn't have a family. Uncle Trevor urges Rita to get invited over to Michael's house (presumably so Rita's mental status would be discovered.) The Bluth family attempts to be nice and welcome Rita by picking her up from school in the family cabin. Buster sees her seal backpack and knocks her unconscious. G.O.B. feeds her a forget-me-now pill (or a roofie) to make her forget the abduction. They dump her on a bench where Michael later finds her. He stops by Balboa Towers to congratulate Buster and Rita finds her way up to the apartment and says "I don't like these people". Michael then finds out G.O.B. roofied Rita, and decides to be 100% honest with her and tell her all about his family's legal troubles. ("Forget-Me-Now")

Before going on a trip, Rita calls Michael a "pussy", which in British English means "sweetheart" (as in a pussycat). Michael takes it as a critique on his manliness and goes on a high intensity (one too extreme for Michael's level) workout with Steve Holt to impress Rita at the Church and State Fair triathlon. After taking Oxycontin and running the childish Father-Son Triathlon, Rita appears. She again calls Michael a "pussy" and kisses him on the cheek, but this time Michael knows what she means. ("Notapusy")

Rita and Michael see Love, Indubitably and tour a Bluth Company construction site. Trevor tells Rita that she is there to "learn", not to fall in love. He reminds her of her objective by showing her a gold medallion. The Bluth family is made aware of a mole in their midst, and they assume it is Rita. The code name "Mr. F" is thrown out by Bob Loblaw. Michael assumes that since it is a "Mr." it cannot be Rita. On the Tunnel of Love, Indubitably ride at Tantamount Studios, Michael notices Rita's MRF bracelet and sees Trevor sneaking up behind them. He pushes Trevor into a hot tub in the ride and escapes. He calls Bob Loblaw to have Rita deported but when he realizes "Mr. F" is Mr. Fnke he goes to her house to pick her up. She steals the gold medallion, which turns out to be a piece of chocolate. FBI agents watching the Bluth family discuss that Rita is an MRF: Mentally Re----ed Female. ("Mr. F")

After telling his family that he is marrying Rita, they ask if he's gotten physical with her yet. They make him think she may just be marrying him for the greencard. Michael tries to plan a night of passion with her at a hotel, but she is locked into her apartment by Trevor's "invisible locks". He rescues her and takes her to the hotel, where George Michael shows his dad a video of Rita eating plastic fruit. Michael puts the pieces together and realizes she is mentally challenged. The next morning, Michael finds his family throwing him and Rita a surprise wedding. They found out from Uncle Trevor that Rita was filthy rich, so they wanted to rush the wedding before Michael found out. Michael let the cat out of the bag, to a dismayed Rita. They broke up and Rita walked across the pool (as part of G.O.B.'s illusion) as she left Michael's life forever. ("The Ocean Walker")

As seen in Mr. F, she can play the banjo quite well, though it's sort of implied she can only play one song. It's referenced throughout the episodes in which she appears that she is a former Olympian. While the narrator explains the Rita storyline, a photo montage of Rita running the "Two Legged Race" in the Special Olympics is shown. ("Prison Break-In")

For eight seasons, and over 100 episodes, Dexter became a household name, and is still one of many successful shows that came from the Showtime network. Dexter exploded with success, not only because of Michael C. Hall's performance of the troubled blood splatter analyst, but for the terrific storylines, and relationships he retained (or demolished) along the way.

Sure, viewers might prefer one of his love interests over another, but no one can argue the impact Rita Bennett had on Dexter. She was just as damaged as he was, and for that, they somehow made their relationship work. Rita was sweet, understanding and open to loving again, despite the abuse she endured from her ex-husband. Although Rita only survived until season four, her relationship and short marriage to Dexter was memorable, and as fans get ready for the Dexter mini-series, they might want to take a stroll down memory lane and experience their unique love story all over again.
