Still, I am puzzled by this. Puzzlement is not surprise, of course: I have suffered under the ban on ghoul and devil costumes since my fundamentalist youth. That fundamentalists should prove squeamish about the devils was no surprise; but that Catholics should be squeamish as well was.

The prudish will tender two obvious facts in response: that St. Anthony and Julian were spiritual virtuosos and that our children are not. The former, they will say, could mock the devils in ways that might prove perilous for children. True enough. But then I rather doubt dressing them like the holy dead imperils them any less.

DH and I are having a disagreement on whether or not to let our daughter, who is 8, dress up as a devil for halloween. He says it's encouraging her to be evil, and its not right. I say he's being absolutely ridic, its halloween, its just for fun, she's not gonna run out an become a devil worshipper. Would you all mind if your young daughters dressed as a devil?

My ODS was a devil on his 1st birthday. He was a cutie in his devil costume. I thought it was funny, because well he got into everything. I called him my little devil. It was just a nickname and there was no 'devil worshipping' in my household!

Yes. I would mind. I would not let DD dress as a devil and neither would DH. Not because I think it would make her a devil worshipper but because I believe it brings attention to something negative that we do not celebrate...satan.

My son's school has decided to allow the kids to dress up on Halloween. He has decided that he wants to dress up as the devil. In a little red hat with horns, red shoes and a red cape. It's obviously a devil costume.

The school is a public school, so kids from all different backgrounds attend. The rules of dressing up only state that they are not allowed masks or props, no other rules about what is or is not allowed as far as costume themes go.

I would let my kids wear it, it's totally a traditional Halloween outfit and obviously your kid isn't practicing Satanic rituals at home, and yet I'm sure there will be some parent who finds it offensive.

I think a devil costume is about the same as a unicorn costume in that both are fictional beings (in my opinion). And if the devil DOES exist, I can't imagine that our image of him is accurate at all. I mean, red horns and a cape is a pretty unlikely reality. So I say, go for it!

This is my concern! I don't want a parent or child approaching him and giving him crap about his costume. I also don't want someone complaining and then I have to come back and bring him another costume!

A friends daughter 8yo/3rd grade was going to be a devil. She decided against it b/c she didn't think it was appropriate. I didn't even really give it a second thought. I mentioned to SO (who's not religious at all) and said it's obvious that's unacceptable. You don't wear that kind of costume to school.
