The remote controls the media player via Bluetooth (which means you do not need to direct the remote towards the media player and that the media player can be hidden). The built-in microphone enables Voice Search functionality. Besides, the remote can use IR channel to control TV and A/V receivers.
The media player has the built-in IR receiver and can be controlled also by IR commands (Google IR codes). This means you can use 3-party programmable or learnable remote of your choice to control the media player, or integrate the media player with your smart home via IR. For example, you can integrate the media player with a smart speaker by using an IR emitter device controlled by the smart speaker.

I'm currently controlling it using Air Mouse with my iOS devices, but I'd really like to be able to use it more simply. Air Mouse simply extends the mouse and keyboard, but doesn't really give you a remote-control style of functionality you might have with a dedicated streaming device like the Apple TV.
Use Plex as your remote-control-friendly home theatre hub. I find Plex to be much easier to set up than XBMC, but where I think Plex really shines is in how easy it is to share your mini's media with other devices.
HippoRemote is a remote control app with better integration with various media players than Mobile Mouse (formerly Air Mouse) and Plex Mobile. Plex Mobile only works with Plex, Mobile Mouse works with most things except Plex. HippoRemote works with Plex, Hulu Desktop, and just about everything else, and it even works with the Netflix player.
I actually don't have one of these yet, but I know several people that love Logitech's Harmony remotes. If want a remote that will also control your TV and receiver, these would definitely be worth checking out.
Plex is probably the most Mac-like of all the media centers out there. Certainly it gets a lot of attention on the Mac and runs very well there. Not quite as open or feature rich as XMBC but it plays a quick game of catchup.
With Plex installed and running you can access all your media, navigate on a TV-friendly UI using your Apple Remote and use plugins like their Netflix plugin to access streaming content all from one slick interface.
The hight contrast (white on black) and large font size allows it to recognize the content better than in other media centers. Background / foreground color and font size (aka how many entries are shown) can be setup in the preferences.
For DVDs a preview will be searched automatically - thru "Movie Info" a preview and description can be set for DVDs and videos / movies. The "Movie Info" also allows it to save all movie informations as HTML page to share these informations with your friends.
Supported media: pictures, videos / movies, PDFs, DVDs, EyeTV movies.By installing the QuickTime extension "Perian", all common video formats are playable (AVI, DivX, MKV etc.).Protected iTunes media (DRM) will be started in iTunes, EyeTV movies in EyeTV or VLC (if EyeTV is not available).
With "NV Remote App" and the iTunes control of the media center, the music can be controlled within the local WLAN. In landscape mode the app will show the current selection - very helpful if one is sitting e.g. in the kitchen and want to change the playlist.
Update: I found another eHow page, this time more promising, on How to Stream Netflix With Windows Media Player on XP. But that doesn't help me, because step #4 instructs to "Click on "Movies" and then the "Watch Instantly Netflix" link" and there is no "Movies" on my WMP11. Is this article bogus (like the comment at the bottom of the articles says)?
There is not a way to use Windows Media Player to directly play Netflix streams. Netflix uses custom DRM, which WMP is not able to understand. The "Watch Instantly Netflix" option just uses Internet Explorer running embedded in Windows Media Player.
That said, the likely reason for Windows Media Player to succed where other media players fail is that WMP will use hardware accelleration to reduce CPU use. Making sure you have up to date video card drivers, up to date Internet Explorer or other browser and an up to date copy of Flash and Silverlight will ensure you have the best chance of taking advantage of hardware accelleration.
at the beginning my litte homeserver-nas was just used for storing of data. now i would like to use it as well as a media player. the server is located in the next room, but connected with a hdmi-cable to the tv.
my first thought was to use plex for streaming media to the tv, but plex doenst read iso's. so i am actually thinking of using kodi as media player. my question now is, how to install a desktop environment on the omv4 installation to use kodi.
I set a neighbor up with an Amazon Fire Stick for his TV. He added the Plex app to it and he is able to stream movies from my Plex server over the internet. I think he paid less than $40 for the stick. It also has Hulu, Netflix, and a huge number of other apps he uses.
As for movies in ISO format, I started that way when I had a player that could play ISOs. The problem with that was the 4GB+ size of each ISO and the time required to rip the disks. A terrible choice unless you want to spend all your free time ripping disks and all your money on hard drives to store the ISOs on.
plex is already running on my tv, thats not the problem - the problem is, that iso-images are not supported by plex, but by kodi - and i am not interessested in converting my ripped movie collection again.
Then build/buy yourself a cheap Kodi box as suggested. Putting a desktop environment on an OMV server is a terrible idea. Also, if you are still ripping your own movies, stop using ISOs for the output going forward. mp4 or mkv are much better choices.
Kodi is not available on oga/rk3326, orangepi-zero2, rpi1 and rpizero2-based images due to not being able to play videos well and a lack of rotation (most oga/rk3326 devices' screens are actually in portrait aspect ratio rotated 90 degrees). This may change in the future as developments are made.
Kodi is a free and open-source media player software application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. Kodi is available for multiple operating systems and hardware platforms, with a software 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls or gamepads. It allows users to play and view most streaming media, such as videos, music, podcasts, and videos from the Internet. It supports all common digital media files from local and network storage media.
