Whenever I attempt to open attachment directly by double clicking or using the three dots followed by open, the file initially opens as expected but then my antivirus software shuts down the software used to open the attachment (e.g. adobe reader, excel etc) and gives me this warning.

Googling the problem suggests this occurs for other software as well but I can't get any of the suggestions made to solve this problem. If I download the file first it is fine. There is also no problem with the legacy version. I've not seen this problem in the past during preview, beta or earlier version on V10 but it is possible that it is a change in AVG rather than EN.
I'm documenting it here so that EN appreciate there could be problems with compatability of the new EN with some common anti virus software. Has anybody else seen this or have any suggestions as to how to solve it?
So, this has changed now with the latest EN v10.3.7 & Avast all updated. I no longer get the Avast popup indicating that powershell has been blocked. Avast does not react at all as it did before. However, once the attachment opens (a spreadsheet), it crashes in the spreadsheet program in a few seconds & disappears from the screen. If you try it again, the spreadsheet goes into recovery mode successfully but crashes again in a few seconds. This is reproducible in v10.3.7 but does not occur in the legacy version. I am running the latest Win10 version 20H2 that was released this week.
It may not be Evernote. I used to use AVG and it was not unusual for a virus database update to break a program I'd been using for sometime. It was one of the reasons I switched to the program I now use. Have you raised it with AVG as an issue?
Yes, I have seen AV updates & definitions cause this type issue before as well. I usually update everything I can prior to troubleshooting. I use Avast & do have an active call open with them. If anything useful is provided or the situation changes, I will note it here. Thanks
It seems that I spoke too soon - the same issue has returned as before. This appears to occur anytime a call is made to utilize any 3rd-party program to open an attachment in Evernote whether a spreadsheet or pdf. Still haven't heard back from Avast on what they see in the logs but I suspect this is an Evernote issue as it worked fine previously. Will advise
If you Google the error message you will find that this is a problem that effects a lot of different software not just Evernote V10. There is alot of frustration on various AVG forums that AVG have failed to sort out this problem going back over a number of months and years. I don't think it is therefore justified to blame EN entirely for the problem. In the end I uninstalled AVG and am using different antivirus software with no problems.
I don't have such problem with any other app, but Evernote. It started immediately after I've update to version 10 - thankfully there's the legacy version, otherwise it'd be impossible to work. The new version is just horrible. It fails to show my noes if I'm offline, it's laggy, slow... The iOS version I even uninstalled, it's so slow I gave up.
any news on this topic? None of my various other software causes this problem in AVG...
Is there someone working on it or is it really necessary to install other virus detection??
Greetings, Wolfgang
That's incredible. As I said in a post above this is a problem users of a number of different pieces of software have not just EN. Of course it's possible that it is an Electron problem - I haven't looked to see whether they are all Electron apps. Anyway I switched and my current antivitus software has no problems with EN V10.
I use ESET anti-virus. No problems here either. This is an issue with the AVG virus database. As others have noted AVAST went away and fixed the issue in their virus records which is what AVG needs to do.
For a few weeks now I've been having frequent 'establish secure connection' errors and usually can't sync files . finally determined it will successfully sync when i turn off Avast web and file shields. Is this a problem with Avast or with Dropbox?
Mac OSX 10.11.6 Avast 12.8
Unfortunately, I don't know what specific Avast version you're using other than 12.8 unless you would have entered it in one your previous posts. I'm merely trying to help you by offering suggestions with what information you provided.
Did you enter dropbox.com and dropbox.exe into Avast's whitelist area? If not... try it and see if it helps. If you did and it didn''t help with your situation, then you should contact Avast's support center to see if they can help you (since it appears as though it's their product that's causing the problem).
You stated in your original post that you, "finally determined it will successfully sync when i turn off Avast web and file shields."... knowing that fact means you should see if their support team has any suggestions for you.
Otherwise, in most cases, the problem lies with your anti-virus software preventing connections it deems as a possible threat. If you've temporarily shut-off Avast and your files sync as you stated... then that's your proof it's probably Avast. In the meantime, you could see if you can exclude dropbox.exe within your Avast program (view Avast's instructions).
Thanks, I did see that but the firewall section of that article doesn't seem to refer to the default firewall on my OS (10.11.6) which doesn't allow me to do anything more specific than allow the dropbox app incoming access.
DId you try the second suggestion that I made yesterday about your antivirus software Avast (read 2nd paragraph)? Since you mentioned it in your OP that Dropbox worked when you shut-off Avast, then you should read the Avast instructions I included yesterday.
After six rounds of comparison, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus (starting at $39.99 per year) comes out with the win, thanks to its multiple perfect malware-detection scores, low system impact and ease of use.
Bitdefender stopped 100 percent of both kinds of malware for Windows 10 and Windows 7. It dipped below perfection in only one round of Windows 8.1 tests, catching 98.7 percent of zero-day malware and 99.9 percent of widespread malware in December 2016. (It got them all in November.)
On Windows 10, Avast blocked all the zero-day malware in one round, but fell below that otherwise, stopping 98.8 percent of zero-day attacks in the previous round. It detected 99.9 percent of widespread malware in September 2016 and 99.8 percent in October. On Windows 8.1, Avast stopped 100 percent of zero-day malware in both rounds, while catching 99.8 percent of widespread malware in November and 99.7 percent in December.
Avast got its worst score on Windows 7, catching 97.5 percent of zero-day malware in August but 100 percent in July. Avast's Windows 7 widespread-malware scores were better, at 99.9 percent in July and 99.8 percent in August.
When it comes to protecting Macs, your choice is a lot easier. AV-TEST's December 2016 test showed that Bitdefender detected 100 percent of malware attacking macOS Sierra, while Avast caught only 96.8 percent.
Avast Free Antivirus and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus both make it easy to see messages saying that your system is safe, but they differ in the presentation. Bitdefender's home screen gives prominent placement to a toggle switch to enable Autopilot mode, which keeps a vigilant eye scanning your files. Avast places a "Run Smart Scan" button in the middle of its home screen.
The installation processes for both programs are mostly the same, with one big difference: Avast will try to install the Google Toolbar into your default web browser and change your browser home page to Google. To avoid this, you'll need to uncheck two small boxes at the bottom left corner of the first Avast installation screen.
