Dear Resident Outdoor Environmental Education Director,
When I directed Resident OEE programs for the YMCA, I always sought to
find ways to keep my highly talented instructors either in my program
or else moving forward in the field. Every year OEE programs, like
yours, hire seasonal instructors, and most of these instructors stay
in the field for one or two years. I am writing to ask your help in
directing your highly qualified instructors, who would be ready to
transition in August 2008, toward our graduate program as a next
step.
Resident OEE instructors are always looking for the next step in their
career, and there are typically limited opportunities for them to
transition into permanent full time positions in your organization. My
desire is to provide meaningful graduate experiences for these
instructors, advance their skills and help keep them in the field so
they can make a difference.
Currently in its fourteenth year, Teton Science Schools' Graduate
Program provides a 50-week experience in natural sciences and
education. Students participate in graduate level courses in place-
based education, instructional strategies, research strategies and
ecology. In addition to course work, students complete 680 hours of
mentored teaching experiences with elementary through high school aged
students and earn up to 32 graduate credits. We work with five partner
universities in the inter-mountain west so students can complete a
Masters degree in an area that matches their interest and career
objectives.
As thanks for being an ambassador for our program, we would offer you
$100 for any student that you direct to our program who eventually
matriculates into Teton Science Schools' Graduate Program. While this
may seem to be an unusual approach, it is our modest thanks to you for
guiding qualified candidates toward our program. Potential students
should know that we have scholarships available for them.
