I often see homes with a big sign in front with "This home is secured with ADT" or stickers on the window with "Ring Security" etc etc. I always wondered if this really actually deters some thieves. Similarly, I have cameras everywhere. Do you advertise a sign that says cameras on premise?
In the past, I have opted *not* to install signage for security cameras. However, the question has been raised about installing signage, so I was wondering if anyone had some additional points that could be for/or against signage.
Just from reviewing your list, one of your "pros for signage" (visitors feel secure) is the opposite as one of your "cons for no signage" (visitors don't feel secure) and the same with a different intent as one of your "cons for signage" (visitors feel "watched"). Also you could legitimately put it under "pros for no signage" (something like visitors feel like they're monitored but we're not shoving it down their throat). So I am disregarding visitor security since it's a complete unknown.
Look at the legality of security cameras. If no signage is required, then don't post any. I assume wherever I go that there is some footage somewhere, so not posting might catch some of the dumber ones. Also, think of this as a CISSP question. Signage about cameras is now serving as a deterrent, visible cameras serving as a better deterrent. But having the footage and no signage may better help you catch them after the fact. Which do you prefer, superficial deterrent, or the possibility of gathering real information?
Put the sign or not the sign your gonna catch someone doing something stupid, it will make people feel safer seeing that and may deter someone a little bit, but if they are gonna steal something... there gonna do it either way!
We have many video cameras across our properties which record on networked digital video recorders. We record everything and keep it for at least a month depending on the disk capacity and number of cameras feeding each recorder.
Because we do not actually have someone monitoring the cameras live feeds we do not say "surveillance". That is, if you get mugged in sight of a camera, there is no one who is sitting there watching the live video who will call 911. We RECORD we do not WATCH.
And, as others have said, we only provide recordings to proper law enforcement authorities.
A. Yes. Most privacy laws require the organization conducting video surveillance to post a clear and understandable notice about the use of cameras on its premises to individuals whose images might be captured by them, before these individuals enter the premises. This gives people the option of not entering the premises if they object to the surveillance. Signs should include a contact in case individuals have questions or if they want access to images related to them."

Technically, no. The sign could be a copyright infringement if it uses the ADT logo. While you won't get in trouble, the company making them probably will. Instead of buying a fake sign, we suggest snagging a sign or sticker from a friend with an ADT system if they have an extra to spare.

Video surveillance signs are notices placed in visible locations to inform and warn people that video cameras are monitoring them. These signs serve multiple purposes: deter criminal activities, ensure compliance with privacy laws by notifying people of surveillance, and reinforce security measures. The term encompasses a variety of sign types, including under video surveillance signs, video surveillance warning signs, and general signs for video surveillance.
Warning signs are the most direct form of video surveillance signs. They typically contain clear messages like "Area under video surveillance" and are designed to alert individuals that their actions are being monitored. These are especially useful in deterring potential criminal activities.
Decals are adhesive signs often used on windows or glass doors. They are subtle yet effective and are particularly useful in environments where traditional symptoms might be intrusive or aesthetically displeasing.
Plaques offer a more permanent and professional option for video surveillance signage. They are often made of durable materials and ideal for corporate environments or areas requiring a more sophisticated look.
