Public PGP keys are made up of a Public Key Packet, a User ID packet and a Signature Packet. I have read the spec but am unsure why the Signature packet is there. Is the signature made with the public key's corresponding private key? Can anyone explain the signature packet to me?
Thanks

The signature is to verify that the User ID packet hasn't been modified
by someone other than the owner of the key.
