I don't know if this is still "moderators only", but just throwing this out there...

Just checking the temperature here, but wondering if we would consider having real(ish) Saturday Rockville Ultimate when Montgomery County agrees to Phase 3.

We will have to wait for details of what Phase 3 specifically means for outdoor sports in MOCO, but Maryland is allowing up to 250 people for outdoor gatherings as of 9/4/20, so we are no longer restricted to 50 or less once our county follows suit...

You may all know this, but from what I see, currently, Ultimate is listed as a medium-risk sport in Montgomery County and IS allowed under its current phase 2 (link below), albeit in a gathering smaller than 50 and supposed to be social distancing which I know is difficult when attempting to play defense (though some of you don't have this problem.)  It does appear that mask-wearing would be ok in place of social distancing, but we all know it makes things difficult (like breathing) in sporting and I assume like me you have seen a lot of people at the grocery store with their mask below the nose - which renders the mask moot as far as I can tell.  Plus I am sure they would easily slip off the nose playing a sport...  Plus I know for the most part, most of us in the Rockville Group have been attempting to be extra-good and conscientious citizens and limit our exposure during this unprecedented pandemic.

That being said they already have theaters, gyms, and casinos at 50% and I have to believe that is higher risk than playing ultimate in the open air.  We should be smart - no high-fiving, take your temperature, stay home if sick at all,  maintain distance on the sidelines, set up a table/station with hand sanitizer... etc...

So, we will continue to monitor what Montgomery County says about Phase 3 when they make that decision, but wondering if people are considering getting back out there when that time comes....

Thanks, Dan (Gibby)

1) I'm up for playing, if we apply risk mitigation as discussed in Dan's message and here:  https://www.usaultimate.org/assets/1/Page/ReturnToPlayGuidance-June2020.pdf

2) A recommended risk mitigation measure is to keep paying groups small, consistent, and local.  There was a recent effort to establish such a group among known-and-responsible members of the "Woodacres" (Bethesda) group that in the before-times regularly played at Westbard on Sundays.  It fell just a few players short of the required size, so hasn't gotten going.  Maybe the 12 who responded there plus a few more from the Rockville crowd could add up to such a group?  We could, for starters anyway, alternate weekends, playing at Westbard on a Sunday, then at Rockville the next Saturday, etc.

"Montgomery Parks Reopens Fields For Soccer Games: Sept. 14"   https://patch.com/maryland/bethesda-chevychase/s/h88y0/montgomery-parks-reopens-fields-soccer-games-sept-14

Based on reclassifying soccer to a "medium risk" sport, which is how Ultimate was already classified.

So maybe we should plan to start on the same schedule?

Just an FYI. I have played a few times lately at Blueberry Hill on Sunday’s. It is a small group less than 20. I will say that though we try to maintain distance while playing (no stall count Or close marking, for instance), when the disc is in the air we coalesce and still end up breathing on each other. I wore a mask for about half of the time last week. It was tough breathing because I am out of shape (as is typical!) and it was warm. It would likely be easier as it cools down. They keep hand sanitizer on the sidelines and I bring my own and use it each time I come off the field.

Basically it is doable but just be aware that you will end up breathing heavily on each other while playing. Hopefully we all are using best practices in our daily lives so we are less likely to be infected and asymptomatic.

That being said, if cases keep at their current level I am in favor of starting up along with soccer on the 14th.

I hope you all are well!

Cheers,
JV

So if no one is up for ultimate in Rockville this weekend, how about a round of disc golf at Seneca Creek State Park? Say at 10 am or sooner. If anyone is without discs I have a few sets to share after disinfecting them.

I know it's not helpful for this weekend, but I will definitely be a regular every weekend after Labor Day!

Good luck playing,
