No tear was being shed while deleting eulogies on the DMK patriarch and his poem or the references to his daughter, Kanimozhi - currently cooling her heels in Tihar jail for the 2G scam - from the textbooks.

The books have reached the schools and the teachers are currently carrying out the deletions, with express order from the government. The education department has issued a detailed note on the portions to be blacked out and how. While some could be struck down with permanent markers, some others are to be hidden behind stickers.

Even Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar and the DMK's founder C. N. Annadurai, after whom the AIADMK is christened, have not escaped the guillotine. Thiruvallur's image, part of the World Classical Tamil Conference logo, is printed on the back cover of most of the textbooks. So is the logo of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. Both have to be covered with stickers.

For Karunanidhi, the acclaimed film scriptwriter, it is a bitter pill to swallow as he never expected that the verse he had composed for the Tamil jamboree would be consigned to the dustbin once he was out of power. In the Class II textbook, the anthem for classical Tamil composed by him is foremost on the list.

By including himself on the list of pioneers of modern Tamil theatre, the DMK leader forced the current dispensation to delete Annadurai, T. P. Karishnasamy Pavalar, N. S. Krishnan, Kandasamy, TKS Brothers and R. S. Manohar from the books.

Sample this from the Class III English textbook. Titled "Listen to your teacher's experience", it reads: "I attended the World Classical Tamil Conference held at Coimbatore. It was a new and rich experience for our family."

CHENNAI: The Ennum Ezhuthum books adapted to the needs of students with disability studying in government schools received good response from teachers and students from across the state. The school education department, under its inclusive education programme, distributed around 1.2 lakh copies of the books this year.

Ennum Ezhuthum scheme began in April 2022 for classes 1 to 3 in government schools to improve their basic literacy and numeracy skills. It was extended to classes 4 and 5 this academic year. However, disabled students, who were also given textbooks in these categories, found it difficult for them to learn the subjects. Considering this, the school education department this year has introduced books adapted for disabled children. The department conducted a baseline survey for the disabled kids to understand their requirements before creating the books.

The adapted textbook prioritisesvisual appeal and simplicity. It uses vibrant colours and increased pictorial content while minimising clutter. For instance, if the original textbook features ten balloons with different words and instructions to colour specific ones, the adapted version simplifies the activity to only four balloons. Additionally, the adapted book employs straightforward sentences, ensuring that children can easily comprehend the content. Officials said that some of the elements from this book have been now introduced in usual books also as part of the whole class approach.

Samacheer Kalvi or Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education or Equitable education system is a School Education Department of Government of Tamil Nadu, India programme to integrate the various school educational systems within the state. Uniform System of School Education was implemented by Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act 2010 which paves way for quality education to all children without any discrimination based on their economic, social or cultural background. The new system of education was introduced for classes I and VI in the 2010 academic year.

The system was introduced by Karunanidhi-led DMK government. It was scrapped by Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK government shortly after assuming office in May 2011.[1] The scrapping was challenged in the court. The Supreme Court of India in its verdict in August 2011, directed the AIADMK government to implement it.[2]

There are over 12 million students in four streams of school education comprising about 45,000 state board schools, 11,000 matriculation schools, 25 oriental schools and 50 Anglo-Indian schools, with different syllabus, textbooks and schemes of examinations.

The main need for this system to be proclaimed as the syllabus in Tamil Nadu, was that all the school students must have uniform study, diminishing the variations between the Matriculation or CBSE Students and the Government school Students. The motivation for a uniform syllabus was obtained from the Ex. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, K. Kamaraj who was the first to initiate a uniform dress code in schools to reduce the differentiation between students from households with varying income. Tamil Nadu government also published school books in digital format.[3]

On 9 August 2011, the Supreme Court of India rejected Tamil Nadu State Government's request to drop the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education and also directed the state government to implement the Uniform System of School Education (Amendment) Act within 10 days i.e., within 19 August 2011.[5] The Supreme Court of India in its order said that any sort of objectionable material such as personal glorification, self publicity and promotion involved, could be deleted, rather than putting the operation of the Act 2010 in abeyance.[citation needed]

On 23 February 2022, a public interest litigation petition was filed the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State government to adopt the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) syllabus for State Board schools. The petitioners claimed that Samacheer Kalvi was not helping the students crack the competitive exams. The HC dismissed the petition, at the stage of admission. First Division Bench of Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy did not entertain the case and said that it was for the government and not the court to decide the appropriate type of syllabus for schools.[6]

In a bid to bring relief to school children from carrying an overload of books, Tamil Nadu government will introduce trimester system in schools for classes I-VIII from the next academic year, 2012-13.

In a Government Order dated December 9, the department said a solution for the problem was to introduce trimester pattern, as announced by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in August in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The education department has ordered 4.1 crore textbooks, of which 3.8 crore have already been printed and delivered. This means that 91 per cent of the textbooks have been printed and delivered to the designated centres.

The Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation in a statement on Monday said the printing of textbooks for classes 8 to 12 is complete and for other classes a small percentage remains to be printed. However, the Corporation said the printing of books for classes 1 and 2 is pending owing to the lockdown.

An official with the Textbook Corporation told IANS, "As this was an election year, we commenced printing in January itself and moved the printed books to the 120 designated centres across the state in March and April. With no major corrections in the book, the printing work began in advance."

P.B. Prince Gajendra Babu, General Secretary, State Platform for Common School System, speaking to IANS said, "The state government should take steps to deliver books to the doorstep of the students for the academic year 2021-22 in view of the pandemic. The government must initiate steps to deliver both textbooks and notebooks to students in government and private schools."

The corporation is responsible for publishing, printing, and selling books free of cost to the government and government-aided schools, and also to private schools at a rate fixed by the government. It has been producing books for English and Tamil medium syllabi for students of Classes I to XII. The post was previously held by former AIADMK MLA B Valarmathi.

The appointment of Leoni has evoked a mixed response. PMK youth-wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss urged the government to withdraw its decision. Taking to Twitter, he said Leoni, who has been regularly making derogatory remarks against women, should be replaced by a qualified educationist. He said appointing a person like Leoni is a disgrace to the post.

That was an era when an elder sibling, cousin or neighbour would pass down their textbooks along with other school materials like bags and uniforms to the younger ones. We would cover them with old newspapers and stitch unused papers from notebooks to make new ones.

The Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation (TTESC) is likely to start a book collection drive with the students passing in this academic year. The collected books will then be distributed to the new batches next year. However, it is optional for them to choose the used books, which will be distributed for free.
