Hi all,

Standard Rocks 5.4.3 deployment. As soon as the compute node is done
deploying, I cannot login as root on the compute node's console. SSH
from the headnode to the compute node works fine without any password
prompts.

Sep 7 23:24:42 compute-0-0 login: pam_unix(login:auth): authentication
failure; logname=LOGIN uid=0 euid=0 tty=tty1 ruser= rhost= user=root
Sep 7 23:24:45 compute-0-0 login: FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM (null) FOR root,
Authentication failure

What simple step am I missing here? I was under the impression that the
root password defined on install is the one used on all nodes at
deployment time.

Not anymore :-). So things are working as they are supposed to.
See
http://www.rocksclusters.org/roll-documentation/base/5.4.3/customization-passwd.html

We highly recommend that you use a different root password for your compute
nodes.
You can set the same root password on -all- your compute nodes with
# rocks set host sec_attr compute attr=root_pw
Enter root_pw:
Confirm root_pw:
# rocks sync host sec_attr compute

-P
