Hi everyone,

The way my front end connects to the public network is plugging into a
switch which is also shared by other people's computers. The IP addresses is
assigned by a DHCP server on the public network. Therefore, if I want to
build a Rocks cluster and the front end also runs a DHCP service, the others
will have a problem connecting the internet and my front end will show there
are more computers in the database than I actually have.

I am not so sure about this point. If it is right, what should I do?
Thanks for any reply.

Xiaopeng

First, ROCKS frontend need to have at least 2 network cards, one for
private and another for public network

The DHCP server for ROCKS frontend will operate only on private network.
This will not intefere with public network. I am running ROCKS clusters
in similar situation without any problem.

However, you will need to have a fixed public IP for your frontend. You
will need to request your network administrator a fixed IP for public
network card on ROCKS frontend. ROCKS frontend won't works on DHCP
assigned IP address (though you may use that DHCP assigned IP address as
fixed address, but it will most likely create problem).

Hi, Somsak

I have 2 nics in the front end.

In the Chapter 2 (Installing a Rocks cluster) in the user's guide of Rocks,
the step 3 says that, "All screens in this step may not appear during your
installation. You will only see these screens if there is not a DHCP server
on your public network that answers the frontend’s DHCP request." Doesn't it
mean that the Rocks cluster can work with another DHCP server on the public
network? Additionally, before we can get these screens, the processure of
installation stops by "sending request for IP information on eth1...". My
installation stucked there very often. I have to reboot and start to build
again. Sometimes I got the screens, after I choose the "Mannual
Configuration" about the IP and then I can finish building the frond end.
Actually, there is a DHCP server on our public network. Our PCs can connect
the internet only after the DHCP server assigns IPs for our PCs. Therefore,
in the front end, I still can't google.

In the front end, I run the command "insert-ethers" in the terminal. I can
detect some computers, but it is very slow(Only 11 computers since 9:00pm
last night). I have 13 computer nodes. I don't know if there are other
computers that are not belong to me. More seriously, there is nothing in the
"()", no "*", no error code, so the computer nodes has not successfully
requested the kickstart file from the frond end.

what should I do? I have no idea now. Thanks for any suggestion!

Some additional information: my computer nodes are all brand new HP
computers with Windows Vista installed.(have not configured it yet). I just
change the boot priority to PXE boot first from BIOS. For the frond end, I
use the manually partition to erase the Vista. After I turn on the computer
nodes, the insert-ethers program can't detect them simultaneously. Like I
said, only 11 since 9:00pm last night.

after I run command "ifconfig /release or /renew" on the front end, it shows
"error fetching interface information: Device not found". Is this because I
chose the "manual configuration" about the IP in the initial steps?
