Our lab has a couple of display walls that are need of an upgrade and
I was considering using Rocks + Viz roll + Hiper roll in an effort to
reduce the time I spend managing and configuring. However, all of the
machines in our clusters are i686, so running the 64-bit viz and hiper
rolls are out of the question (as is replacing all of the machines).

I saw an earlier post that there was no plans for 32-bit support for
the viz roll. I could just install Rocks 5.0 (I haven't yet found a
list of what has changed between 5.0 and 5.2), but it doesn't seem
like a great idea to switch over to an infrastructure that has already
end-of-lifed for our system. Am I really out in the cold?

Any thoughts, hints, advice appreciated
Christopher

I'm doing proof-of-concept and currently running ROCKS 5.0, OS roll 5.2,
with Viz roll 5.0 and SAGE 3.0a over some Pentium boxes. Just make sure
you're reading the right documentation because the syntax has changed
significantly.

If the Viz roll is like many of the rolls I have developed, it is just a matter of building the roll from source code on the 32-bit machine. I don't build my rolls for 32-bit either, but they will all work on 32-bit machines if they are built on the 32-bit machine. The reason I do not provide 32-bit versions is the lack of 32-bit hardware to test it on.

This isn't exactly correct for Viz. Some of the packages get confused
between lib64 and lib. There is a small amount of development needed
to get 32bit Viz working.

Since this is the 2nd request for 32bit Viz we will seriously consider
releasing a 32bit version of the Roll. For now you can use the 5.0
Viz Roll with Rocks 5.1 for older non-em64t Xeon (and older) hardware.
