All - I went to Locher Tract yesterday morning to see which winter birds were present. The beaver pond and back pond were frozen over - it was in the mid-20s. In the marsh grass near the beaver pond there were many Song and Swamp Sparrows. Farther back and
towards the back pond in the trees were Golden-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, Bluebirds, White-throated Sparrows, Red-bellied and Pileated WP, and near the wooden bridge there was a Winter Wren. In the trees near the parking area there were Carolina Chickadees,
Carolina Wren, Titmice, and a group of Ruby-crowned Kinglets. I looked hard for a creeper but didn't find one. On the way back to Lexington, I drove along River Rd. There were about 30 Common Mergansers and one Hooded Merganser.
We've had 5-6 Purple Finches at our house feeders today.
