This did it:

Both problems gone at once. Finally, I can go to bed now. :)

I posted this at that same site just now though it's being held for
review since I have a URL in it. Anyway, here it is:

Re Mikey's suggested fix-- be aware that he is using files from his
pod. That is fine, but these files are not left alone by the O/S.
For example, someone had problems after installing Mikey's files, as
did I:

http://modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?p=872761

Also another problem came up for me this AM that did not come up for
me 2 days ago or yesterday and that is the screen froze out when apps
were loaded. That is, I could tap icons on SummerBoard but when the
app opened, taps on the screen didn't do anything. So I went to the
files I had replaced and noticed in ~Library/Lockdown/data_ark.plist
that there was an entry between 'key' tags called '-Brickstate' that
was set to "true". I had never seen this before! I changed it to
'false', replaced the file and rebooted my pod and it started working
again-- however that broke Yahoo mail and Youtube-- back to where I
started!

So the lesson here is this: stuff is going on with this OS just like
any other OS that we don't fully know about. What I'd suggest is that
if you do use someone else's files for a fix like this, be sure your
old files are backed up but be aware that after other updates and
changes, whatever those files were doing for you not only may stop
doing it but also may break something else!

I have found also that the profile file gets rewritten it seems on
occasion for reasons I don't know. This messes up my PATH value and I
have created a Tapp app line entry to restore it. I don't know though
if this may one day mess up things in profile that were changed for
the good by subsequently installed apps-- see what I mean?

We're on the bleeding edge here so we just have to get used to it.
Also, and not to denigrate Mikey's efforts here, but be careful who
you get fixes from or at least be sure you review the files' contents
before putting them there. Not saying Mikey meant anything wrong or
was being a bad contributor-- just that remember we are messing with
some fairly low-level stuff when we hack these pods and advice given
even with the best of intentions can work for one person but not for
another. Still, thanks to Mikey for his efforts to help us all, and
indeed, this gives us progress.

Still with the problems with YT under 1.1.4-- seems some things work
for some and not for others. I had to roll back the "Mikey" changes
since they caused my pod to become unresponsive at app runtime. I
have heard that ziPhone 3.0 will break a pod and fix the YT problem
but I am not going to assume that is the case. So I am mulling
restoring and re-breaking my pod with it, but really, do I want to go
through all the crap I have done, and put this thing back together
again? Granted, a lot of stuff was learning cycle and so getting back
up to where it was before would not take nearly as long.

In any case, if you stumble upon this group and see this post, and are
considering installing syncfix as a solution, I caution you against
it. While posts like these look promising enough:

The following describes my experience today:

Short version: Don't do it!

Alleluia, finally. The YT app and Mail are now working again.

Here's what happened:

I followed the directions on this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkqZsXWdDQk
even though I hadn't tried using the Customize package to do things
like change the wording on the pod, etc. So after running the 1.1.4
compatibility patch, I installed the "Customize" package and then as
the vid said to do, uninstalled it. The next direction he gave
however I couldn't follow since the source he mentioned (http://
touchrepo.com/repo.xml) to add customize 1.1.3 and alas, that source
was off-line. I was screwed, or so I thought. So I uninstalled the
"Customize" package and figured that was that. "Well, I tried," I
thought.

Next day I was at work and wanted to copy some converted vids over to
my pod [if you must know, they were Monty Python clips from Youtube.
No, they were not porno. :) ]. I fired up iTunes and plugged in my
pod. The pod firmware version now read "1.1.3". That, I did not
expect. Well, I copied over the .mp4 files and rebooted the pod,
then for kicks and giggles tried to see if Youtube worked. It did. I
couldn't believe it. To press my luck I checked the Mail app and yes,
that now worked.

I waited til today to make sure it was all real and wasn't going to
revert for some reason. No, it still works.

So I have a jailbroken pod now with the native apps all working and
the standard upgrades (SummerBoard, etc.) operating just fine. This
is the idea backup point.

So I did it. That's for the next discussion since it is its own
topic.
