Hello,

Do you want to take action for Safer Speeds on City Streets?

On Tuesday November 14th, there will be a Speak to Council session from 6:30-7:30 PM at City Hall. This is open to all citizens and is a great way for you to let Council know how you feel about safer streets. To speak to Council, all you need to do is call 585-428-7538 and sign up before 5:30 PM on the 17th. If you want tips on preparing to speak, I am more than happy to help. Just reply to this email or give me a call!

Talking Points:

Each of you know why speeding cars are one of the top barriers for kids and adults to walk, bike and play in your neighborhood. Tonight we ask that you share your stories on why it’s time City Council should take action and lower the residential speed limit. Make your story personal, talk about examples in your neighborhood, and use some of the data below to enhance your argument.

The facts:

-          Healthi Kids data shows that speeding cars is one of the top barriers for kids being able to walk, bike and play in their neighborhood

-          Last year 11 pedestrians and 1 bicyclist were killed on Rochester’s streets. By lowering the speed limit to 25mph we’ll make it safer for kids and families, and lower the chances of fatalities happening on our streets.

-          Other cities like New York, Cambridge, and Seattle have lowered their speed limit

-          Lower speeds allow drivers more time to react to potential dangers, which means shorter break times, and the ability to reduce speed prior to impact. Slower speed limits lead to less pedestrian/cyclist fatalities

The logistics:

Jenn and I will be there Tuesday at 6:15 PM inside on the ground floor of the Church St. entrance. If you have them, can you please wear your PlayROCs t-shirts? If not, I have extras I’ll bring along with.

If you haven’t already signed up to speak, but would like to, you have until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday to call the clerk’s office to register. Provide your name, affiliation, and the topic you’d like to present on (i.e. reducing the speed limit).

The Clerks Office: (585) 428-7421
