I have a friend with COPD and cannot pedal without significant assistance. I was thinking of finding a bike trailer for an adult or a bike sidecar so she can still enjoy bike rides. She used to bike around Honeoye lake when she was young. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Mike

Not sure about bicycle sidecars or trailers meant for adults, but an electric bike may be the best option. Could set up one with a high-assist controller and a throttle so that she could put in a bit of effort when she wants, and then use the throttle as necessary.
Just my $.02

Michael- I have worked with older kids which were handicapped and found little off the shelf common manufactured trailers which fit a 10 year old sized person. I also think the electric assist bike is the first solution if the rider still can both balance and has the capacity to make traffic judgments. I have know a few adults with heart issues who use EA bikes with good results.

The recent round table talk that Conkey Cruisers organized (and featured a number od advocacy players) there was mentioned the effort to get the health industry (insurance, Medicare) to include the prescription of a EA bike under their coverage. Andy.

Or, consider a tandem bike with a strong fellow rider.  That way she could get some exercise and exert up to her ability with the security of the other rider monitoring and assisting her.

I'd personally go with a trike with a motor -- something like http://www.worksmancycles.com/pt3cb-hub-eng.html. I think a mid-drive motor with pedal assist would be a better option if one exists, but a hub motor works too.

Thank you all for the support and suggestions! If the budget was unlimited, I would recommend a pedal assist tadpole ( 3 wheeled recumbent). I will search for a used tandem and put a rear rack on it for the O2 bottle. I need the exercise!

Thank you again!

Mark- This is a worthy suggestion. I will say that my couple of years riding captain for the Gov. Morehead school in Raleigh, NC was an eye opening experience, and one I will not do again. Granted this is far from what you suggest and the OP’s beginning situation. I just found I’m not strong enough to overcome some challenged stokers style of pedaling. Andy.
