Hi everybody--
I've got good news this morning: U of R earned a silver "Bicycle Friendly" award from the League of American Bicyclists this year. That's an improvement from bronze, which they've earned in the past, with Glenn Cerosaletti doing a lot of the heavy lifting, I think. This article has more details. The Department of Transportation and Parking Management has authority for such things and is discussed in the article, so please consider sending a quick note of thanks to Jim Chodak, the director.

Does anybody know if Jim and his staff initiated the application? Or was Glenn leading the charge again?

Thanks for letting us know, Doug. I did not lead the charge; Jim and Bruce Bashwiner mentioned to us in a meeting a couple of months ago that they had pursued it. Andrea Walton and Jeff Foster may also have been instrumental, as well as perhaps our sustainability coordinator in Facilities, Amy Kadrie. Good idea to exercise some positive reinforcement with this accomplishment.

Glad to see they got silver. The classes Tracey and I taught were a lot of fun and decently attended (at least at the Med Center). So many people on the river campus bike anyway and aren't interested in classes. The University's new biking brochure is very well done. And of course they greatly benefit from being right on the riverway trail.

Obviously, access from Elmwood is horrendous and too intimidating for most people. That's gotta improve along with Mt. Hope.

Tracey and I are meeting with Andrea soon to discuss 2019 class offerings. There's a good chance they'll have us teach at the School of Music too this year.

To me, they still need to incentivize giving up a parking spot in order to bike. The $ savings ought to be enough, but people still need a momma-bird push. Maybe a free bike tune-up or something.

I am sure the addition of Pace bike rental, Jesse and Tracy safety education talks, and  RTS smart station shelters all helped to push the UR to Silver level. The UR, as an employer, is moving in the right direction. I hope other institutions and companies are inspired by the UR progress. We need to find a way for the UR to present at our Summit. Send me some names and contact info to invite them to our Advisory Committee meeting in February.
