I'm sure a few have seen this already, but the City has put out a request for proposals for a Slow-Roll like ride they want to debut in the late summer. They are looking for an organization to manage the four Thursday rides Aug 24 - Sep 14.

They have an open meeting at City Hall about it Wednesday, May 10th at 4pm if anyone can make it.

I can make it. This isn't much different than what DC Bike Party does for their monthly rides, but they also have a lot of volunteers to help organize and marshal the rides.

Out of curiosity, is there anyone with the time and interest in doing that? All you'd be doing is helping lead the ride, making sure no one gets left behind, and corking an intersection if a light changes before the pack can make it through. DCBP regularly gets over 100 people in attendance, so holding up traffic becomes a necessity to keep everyone together and safe.

Did anyone else make it yesterday?

Chris, what are your thoughts?

Theresa Bowick of Conkey Cruisers attended and seemed intent on running these rides, stating she planned to file a proposal with the city. Personally, I feel like she's in a better position to organize this through Conkey Crusiers and has more experience/clout than RCA does to organize them and get people to attend.

I think it'd be a win-win situation if interested people worked with her while RCA focuses more on infrastructure and education issues, but that's my two cents. I don't mean to dissuade RCA from responding to the RFP, but what the city is looking for will be a lot of work that no one person will be able to do.

Hi Chris and group,

Currently RCA does not have a part time employee who could respond to this proposal.  We’d welcome a volunteer from our group to step forward but most of our members are preoccupied with work and family commitments which preclude volunteering to work as the lead on this proposal.

We are highly supportive of the Slow rider project and I’m sure some of us will be helping whoever takes the lead on this.  We are excited that the city is initiating the program.

I plan on working with Theresa if only to help make these rides a success and encourage the city to do it again in the future. I'm sure she could use any help can get. What the city is looking to do is very similar to a monthly ride in DC that I helped organize and marshal, so the least I can do is offer experience and help marshal them. The first Conkey Crusiers ride of the year is in July in case anyone else wants to come to it to connect with her (or maybe we could invite her to the next meeting?).

The events committee said they want 300 - 400 people on these rides. I think Rochester could do twice that, if not more.

Chris,

It’s great that you have the experience and can assist in setting up the rides.  We will probably be involved in helping design the rides, Richard DeSarra is a master of the city streets and best routes for bicyclists because he’s been doing it over 20 years.   We will also be volunteering to help marshall the rides etc.  We have many highly experienced riders and would be glad to work with Teresa or whatever group gets the contract.  Teresa is on the RCA board and we fully support any project her work on this and any other project.

I think we should have Thersa at our next meeting to hear her plans to organize the Slow Roll. I am sure we get additional vols to join her.

Hey Scott,

That's great to hear! Your first email sounded like our resources are stretched thin and we wouldn't have many people available to help with these rides.

I don't have Theresa's contact info. Is she subscribed to this mailing list or is there someone who can get in touch with her?
